The final cleaning project on the restoration of my 52 8N was the lift cover. As I posted earlier I finally got the yoke to come off. I wasn't going to strip it all down but the more I took apart the more gunk I spotted, (everything else on the tractor has been taken apart and is spotless). Sooo...off comes the lift arms - lift shaft - ram arm - bushings and everything else that was removable. I don't have any problem with the "everything else part, but how am I going to make sure the lift arms - lift shaft and ram arm all go back together correctly? I mean they're splined shafts in there so I'm assuming they have to be re-installed a certain way. Always been my problem...never afraid to strip something down figuring I'll be able to figure out how to put it back together when the time comes. Of course I haven't always had a whole country (or two) of knowledgable people to learn from until now. Anything I need to know here?

Pressing your luck?? That shaft is hard to get out because of the lift arms. There is a blind spline (one with out a gruve) that will line up the arms and ram arm when you put it back together. Some how I don't think you have knocked them out yet have you. If you have succeeded in removing them with out a 100 ton press (I had to use one once on a lift arm that was stuck) you will see the spline with the no gruve that will let it go back together only one way. No Mark, the only thing that I could remove from that lift cover now is grease - old paint and rust. Everything else is in the solvent bin soaking overnight. So am I in trouble here?

If that lift shaft did not leak I would only clean them up from the outside. If you think that rear pin was hard, mushroom that rock shaft inside the lift arm and see what you spend to fix it afterwards. If it aint broke don't fix it. You can clean the lift cover with out tearing it apart. Pull it and clean it good check for play on the rock shaft with no load on it. If you have problems with leak down fix the piston. All you will do by tearing the shaft and arms off is get to see them. Nothing to clean on the inside area of those parts. Just my .05 cents of warning to you. Mark H.

Well...too late now. I'm a clean freak I guess, and that whole thing, (everything) was full of gunk - sand and whathaveyou that I just couldn't let it go. Oh well...I guess we'll see how I make out when I go to put it back together. Oh well, good lesson for me. I always learn the hard way...but I do learn.

It will come apart just don't beat on it to much. I would take it to a machine shop spend 15.00 to 20.00 and have the shaft pressed out. Then you can clean it and put it back together with out there help. Mark H.

Thanks Jay,

I've already got all the manuals, I just haven't started to put everything back together yet and was wondering if maybe I'd gone too far. I figure if someone put it together in the first place, I, with the help of the manual and you guys, can get it back together again. Besides, I consider you all part of the family and it's good to talk to ya.
