Need the expert help from you tractor dudes. My 8n (recent purchase) has been tuned and the carberator rebuilt by a tractor mechanic. The improvement in performance was helpful but it still seems to lack power. If any real load is placed on the engine it bogs down (an Alabama expression) and then when the load is removed (push in the clutch) it continues to miss, rpms go up and down and back fire until I play aroud with the throttle a little (less gas, more gas) then it will smooth out again until I load the engine again. Bush hogging is next to impossible.

Dan , Old Ns will run with plug wires crossed, they just wont have much power and backfire sometimes . Wont cost nothing to check. I think fireing order is 1 2 4 3 good luck .

I am sorry so many would spend your money on governor rebuild kits without checkng more simple solutions first. Even though though the carb has been rebuilt, it sound s as though the high speed jet is sligtly too lean. Turn the big adjustment screw on the carb ccw 1/8 turn at a time and check each time to see if the problem improves. Remember how much you turn the adjustment so you can return it if this is not the problem. The second thing to check is a partially clogged fuel flow. This would explain the erratic running engine which will even out when you play with the throttle. These won't cost you a penny and should be checked first. A rebuilt governor may be your problem but it will NOT help if you have a misdjusted carb or restricted fuel flow.

I can't say from what you post whether the governor is the problem or reacting to the problem. One way to tell is disconnect the governor linkage, run a stiff piece of wire to the throttle arm and see if the problem persists.

Let us know what happens. Also if the problem follows varying speed without the governor. With enough information somebody here will recognize and know how to fix.

Dan..... ...from your description, sounds like a "governor" problem. Rebuild kits about $75, re-built about $250. For $29 I&T FO-4 manual, I'd learn how to save $175..... ...Dell

Well, I don't think so from Dan's description; as it sounds to me as if the governor is working against a problem with the ignition... I could be wrong - have been there a million times and am not ashamed to admit it.

Isn't that F0-4 Manual the one that everyone admitted this morning had instructions to place the thermostat first one way and then the other way in the radiator hose? I guess you can't miss for $29.00.

No wonder it's cheap.

Regards.

Hi Larry. You're right. The manual may have some ambiguities. That is the nature of service information. I have been writing service manuals for about 15 years and still get "misprints" into the service commuity. We have to go with the best information that we can get to make print deadlines. We also are human (I collect N's). That is why we publish update bulletins. Even when we are perfect (not) these d--- computer gremlins drive a sane man insane with errors.

I haven't had my N for very long, but there are already a bunch of pages printed out from this board stuck in my I&T FO-4 manual. :-)
