I just purchased a new starter for my 8N. The starter has the new improved rachet type starter drive.
My questions is, what type lube do I use on the drive portion of the starter and is there any particular area on the drive that I should lube more then other area's. Thanks in advnce guys.

Ted..... ...as counter-intutitive as it might seem, all starter drives are meant to be operated "un-lubricated". All lubes dry out and turn to sticky varnish and slow down the extention of the drive into the flywheel ring while allowing the electric starter motor to really get up to speed and grind away without engaging.

BAD IDEA..... ....respectfully, Dell who sez: ratcheting started clutch drive is the way to go

Are you including graphite and BreakFree(lube, set & wipe off...claims to leave PTFE residue) in this statement??
>All lubes dry out and turn to sticky varnish < I have never lubed my starter with anything, and am just wondering what you think of these. I have used BreakFree for years on dryer rack bushings(nylon) running constantly. The breakfree can be wiped off of somethings, and really does lube. I have used it on my guns also with great results, even near the chamber. Just trying to get your opinion in the spirit of this great addiction....er....board.

Rasty..... ....starter drives are velocity sensitive, That means that anything that SLOWS down the screw drive extension is going to cause starter drive grinding because the starter motor will be up to rpms before the starter gear engages the flywheel ringgear.

The ratchetting clutch modern starter drive has one advantage over the tradition bendix drive in that its kickout takes a little higher engine rpms velocity. That means one semi-puff of a cylinder start is not going to kick out the clutch starter drive like it will a bendix screw drive.

Bottom line, as far as I am concerned, NO STARTER LUBE of anytype anytime..... ....Dell
