My 2N has set most of the winter, since we had no real significant snow fall, but I used it a couple hours about 3 weeks ago to work on the drive way with the box blade and it fired right up. Went to start it yesterday and no go...plenty of gas so I pulled a plug wire and no spark?? I have about 3.5 volts going to the coil...I pulled the coil and cleaned all the connections and blew the crud out of the distributer and still no sparkies. Any ideas? I converted it to 12v a couple of years ago and have had no electrical problems with it.

Check for any grounded wire inside dist. if not then replace points and condensor. It is more likely points and condensor than coil.

3.5V is close enough for the coil to be working correctly. It could be that your points aren't opening -- bump the engine to get the points open and check for full battery voltage at the coil. If it doesn't ever rise above the 3.5V you're seeing, the points aren't opening.

After that, you get to check things like the spring connection from the coil to the distributor, the rotor, the cap and how well the plug wires are connected to the cap. If everything looks good, I'd think about trying a new coil.

Best to use manual at this point. I would bypasss the ignition switch just to make sure. Remember that just voltage to coil doesn't make sparkies. Them volts must leave to have current. Check yor points. HTH

So with a 12 volt conversion, you still get 3.5 volts at the top of the coil, which I assume is with points closed. As I recall, 3.2 is adeal for a 6 volt coil, and as Dell reminds us, the front mount coils are not as durable as we might like them to be. Perhaps it will be as simple as replacing the coil. But while you are at it, maybe a new set of points, rotor, and a condensor too. Couldn't hurt, and all the parts should be less than 40 bucks and labor less than an hour.
