I have a 1940 9N that I would like to upgrade my PTO shaft to the size of the newer implements. I was wondering how involved this process is? I am mechanically inclined so that aspect should'nt be a problem. I guess what I want to know is how much time and what parts are needed to accomplish this. The old shaft in there has an adapter to make the shaft the correct size (slides over it like a sleeve and is not an over run coupler). After moving with it for hours the spline on the adapter have started to twist. I want to replace the PTO shaft to prevent this from happening... What do you guys think?? Also the PTO shaft seems to now be making slight clicking noise as it rotates...

Thanks ahead of time!!

Put a new 1 3/8 in my 48 8N last Monday. Nuttin to it. You could use the nose down in the ditch method but if you haven't changed the tranny/diff/hyd oil in a while this would be a good time to do it. I changed mine a year and a half ago, put on a new shifter boot and keep it parked in a shed. Still had accumulated some water in there. Condensation??

I've seen it done a couple ways. Adaptors, new shaft, and I believe you can get an ORC that is 1 1/8 in and 1 3/8 out.

Jeff,
The complete PTO shaft assembly (1 3/8") (bearing and seal installed) is available from NHF or the marketplace on this board for about $120 should be a 20 min job.-famous last words.....

P.S. Dont forget to drain some gear lube.

Jeff..... ...the 1-3/8 PTO shaft is a direct bolt-in replacement and is to be recommended. Park your tractor nose down innna ditch and its a 15 minute job.

You'll still need an Over Running Coupler on your PTO to run a brushog. The ORC prevents expensive tranny noises. The ORC also prevents all that rotory inertial engergy from backdriving the tractor when you clutch to turn a corner around the barn, fencepost, creekbank, irrigation canal, wife's car (don't ask). $60 cheap. Gettcha one and use it..... ...Dell the sell-appointed ORC safety preacher

Hello the clicking is normal it is coming from the over running clutch,(adapter), if you really want to change out the pto to the bigger size, drain the fluid first then undo the four bolts at the back where the pto shaft goes into the rear end, pull it straight out ,it should pull out easily, but you should use the over running clutch,in case the brush hog speeds fASTER THAN THE TRACTOR, LIKE WHEN YOU ARE GETTING NEAR A FENCE AND PUSH THE CLUTCH IN, THE TRACTOR WITHOUT THE CLUTCH WILL KEEP MOVING FORWARD TILL THE BRUSH HOG SLOWS DOWN SPINNING,it is a safety item keep it on there...IMO
