Let Sleeping Gunk Lie?

I'm about to change the transmission/hydraulic fluid in my 48 N before using it to brush-hog for the first time. I have no idea how it was treated before I owned it and I expect there is a lot of gunk in the case. I've been reading the material on this board about cleaning it out through the rear after removing the PTO shaft and flushing it with diesel. I'd love to know my case is perfectly clean but I'm aftaid I'll do more damage than good by stirring up the crud and having some end up where it does't belong. What do the wise men have to say about this?

I cleaned mine out as good as I could get it without total tear down. I used diesel and various brushes including a old milker line flexable brush to go down under the gears. I also took out the PTO shaft and reached in as far as I could get. There should be a filter to take it out. I have the Live Thang and could install one easy. As far as worrying about stiring it up, I think the gears spinning around in there act like a big milk shake mixer and does a job of that.

Just split a te 20 which is similar to an N. Don't see how you could clean out the sumps without taking the tractor partially apart. But you really don't want the crud in the sumps. These old tractors really need a filter.

I'm rebuilding one right now because it hasn't been maintained and kept clean. The sludge won't just stay down in the bottom of the case. It will be stirred up and go through your hyd pump, ram, and everything else.

I'm assuming your PTO and 3 Point are working fine now.

Pull the round cover off the side where your dipstick is and drain the fluid. You may need a mirror to see better. Shine a flashlight in there and if it hasn't been maintained, you'll see more than sludge. There will be some solid debris in there as well which can come lose and circulate through everything.

You also want to check for water as these tractors are notorious for condensation. Change fluid at least once per year.

Best of luck

Most people get into the sludge removal issue when they are forced to get into the hydraulics or trans. are due to maintenance. I personally would not try to flush the system since you don't have it apart and you really can't reach in to any degree to clean. I think you in fact would stir up a lot of debris which could clog things since I don't believe you'll be able to drain it completely clean. My $.02
