A friend at work asked me to ask on this forum if anyone remembers the octane of premium gas back in 1969. We've been getting answers that range from 88 to 95. I think it was 92 or 93. Does anyone remember for sure? Or maybe a source on the web to go to? Thanks
Charles

Hi Y'all,

Is the high octane that's available today better for the 8N? Or should I just stick with the ol' 87 octane?

Stick with the 87, you could really run on lower than that with the low compression that the N has.

Hi Charles,

Premium at that time was advertised at 100 to 102. However, this figure cannot be compared directly to today's numbers. There are different ways of testing octane. The old octane ratings were derived using the "research" method. Today the posted octane value is an average of the "research" rating, and the lower "motor" rating. I was told that today's premium would be around 98 using the old rating system, but I haven't seen any data myself to confirm that...Al English
