Figure out what's wrong and get it running first. I bet you'll discover that the OEM 6 Volt system isn't a problem.

BTW, my 2N is a 12V conversion that I did without a kit. 'Course, I had a bad generator and wanted to run a 12v sprayer anyway.

I agree with Brian, mine is 12 volts and as far as maint. I do nothing, how many people here do any thing to their car's electric system, this is the reason they went from 6 to 12 volts in the first place was the maint. and you can run more acc. on 12 volts than you can 6 as the alt. has a much higher output.

Gary, I have to agree with everyone (except Brian). My N like so many others starts no matter how cold, and I can run 3 lights at night with no problem. If you are having starting issues, correct the problem not the symptom.

I think you would be wise to review the archives carefully before proceeding. BTW, keeping them clean bright and tight is common sense, and you need to do that whether you go with 6 or 12 volts. So there is really no "additional" maintanence with 6 volts.

Why quit at twelve volts? You want it to turn over faster? Go for twenty four volts and watch that starter spin.

Why not also up grade that wimpy twenty horse engine while you are at it. Three fifty chevies are cheap.

Part of the joy of twelve volt conversions is there are so many ways to do it. Some of them even work.

With the possible exception of various hydralic troubles I would wager twelve volt "upgrades" gone bad are the most frequent post on this board. Some understand, lots more have questions that indicate failure.

If all you are running is the ignition and you can't get six volts to suit you best buy a kit because you are going to need the instructions. On the other and, if you need halogen lights, a tape player, a place to plug in your cell phone then get ahead of the curve because you are going to see higher voltages than twelve out of Detroit and Tokyo in the not too distant future.

Your mileage may vary

Yep! Gotta get me one of those 42 Volt alternators (and a matching battery) as soon as they hit the parts store so I can start answering the "How do I convert to a 42V system" questions.

Not that it'll make much difference.

I agree BJ. The #1 asked question on this board has to do with 12V conversions that don't work properly. BTW You forgot the cruise control, OnStar, and CD player in your list of reasons to convert.

Mine will start the instant I hit the starter button. If that ain't fast enough then do convert. Don't forget that after you spend them 175.00 for the kit you'll still have to buy a battery. Go with the side post to make her real pretty.

Gary, Why the switch over? All of our 6v tractors start as well as 12v tractors! A little maintence is all that's required. Looks a lot better than having a chevy alternator cobbed on and hangin' out too! Pete

I have converted several N's for people, at their request. I have not seen one of them that starts any better than mine. That said, they do have brighter headlights than I do, and can run a 12 volt cooler from an ad on power port. Hardly enough reason to make me want to fight the battle, but if all else fails here is the address of a fellow who has a starter/alternator/generator shop in central PA. he will be more than happy to work with you and get you started.

Here ya go Gary. If 'n' you want to change over to 12 volts, then that's your perogative, and don't let any of these guys here try to tell you any differently. Check out my website, it tells you one of the ways to do it right. Click on the link below.

"If 6 volts is the best, then why isn't everything running on 6 volts these days???"

Clean, Bright, and Tight = More time mechanic-ing and less time getting real work done! Convert to 12 Volts and work WITH your tractor, not ON your tractor! :-)

Gary..... ....What makes you think you need to upgrade your 8N to 12 volts? All yer buddies down at the cornerbar say to? 'Cuz you heard it was the smart thing to do?

Or 'cuz your 6 volt starter doesn't sound like its even turning over like your modern belchfire-V8? 6 volts sound so slooowww, but sure beats the ol'armstrong crank.

Remember the 6 volt mantra: "keep'em clean, bright, and tight". And don't be for using them wimpy 12 volt battery cables. Get some hairy chested double ought (00) size of your thumb battery cables.

They sell 12 volt conversion kits with all the instructions for $150 to $200. Or if you know what you're doing,..... naw, ain't goin' tell ya how cheep ya kin do it because I don't know your electrical expertize. Buy the kit and do it right.

You might want to do a search of the N-Board "archives" and read about the trials and tribulations of the electrically challenged and their 12 volt conversions. As one board contributor sez: "there are many ways to convert to 12 volts and some of them even work".

I'm a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons. That said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6 volt '52 8N, and I know why and how to do it right..... .....respectfully, Dell
