I understand the 3 wire alternator is the preferred method of 12 volt conversion, but I currently have a single wire alternator on my tractor I bought, but I'm not sure it's right. Could someone please provide me with a simple diagram, or step by step wiring requirements for my 9n, front mount distributor. I would apppreciate much any help out there.
Thanks

Doyle..... ....there is nothing inherently wrong with using a 1-wire 12 volt alternator conversion scheme. 1-wire is subductively simple, just be aware of its high rpm requirement to start charging, which is great for high rpm automobile and marine engines. Just connect its output to the battery side of the starter switch. Use 10 ga stranded wire with crimped ring lugs of correct size.

Make certain that your 12 volt battery is negative ground, alternator demands negative ground but the starter doesn't care.

Realize that there are several ways to convert your ignition to 12 volts, and some of them really work.

I recommend the NEW 12 volt front mount ignition coil with a 1/2 ohm 10 watt current limiting resistor from radio shack. DO NOT USE the OEM ballast resistor mounted on the backside of the ignition panel with the 12 volt coil. Understand?..... ..... Dell

Wire from terminal top of coil to resistor on back of dash panel, from other side of resistor to keyswitch, keyswitch to battery. If 6 volt coil, better add another resistor in series with original.
