Today the fields finally got dry enough to hook up the bush hog to the 8N and get to working on them. I spent about 5-6 hours on the N, with about the same amount yet to go. Same fields as always, same 8N, same me.

But geez, what a difference!

The differences were in three changes I had made while waiting for the ground to get dry enough to mow. A new proofmeter. New tires thta are air filled (the old ones were calcium chloride filled). And finally, a padded seat cover.

The proofmeter (my old one did not work) showed me that I had been running the throttle way too high. The tires filled with air were a much lighter pull on the tractor. The padded seat cover sure made it easier on my soon to be 51 year old hind end! Seriously, I could not believe how much easier and cooler the N ran, but I guess that is what doing things properly will do for it.

Anyhow, the fields look good, and the tractor and I are both happier.

Now if I could just finally figure out how to avoid sunburn! :)

Hi Tom. Here's one way that original owners avoided sunburn:

Here's another:

Most tractor supply places sell a universal fit umbrella that mounts to a rear fender, that would be comparable to one of the original solutions.

Hope this helps..... ..... Ed

Tom,

Due to having a lot of "Hedge Apple" trees (with thorns), I have learned to wear long sleeves and long pants. It cuts down on scars and blood. And helps keep the "spots" down on my arms. A long sleeve T shirt is protective and quite cool when you sweat. I also found I had been running way high on the RPM's when I bought a 641 w/proofmeter. My 8N is '47 build,(no P-Meter), and now I run it closer to 1500 RPM. Guestimating, but closer now.

Have fun, & play safe.

Is "Hedge Apple" another name for Bois'd Arc?
Know some call them Horse Apple and Osage Orange, never heard Hedge Apple.
