Not sure how bad a problem this is. I have about 6 or 10 barn cats that keep mice away (I got them when I was keeping an antique car in the barn). Lately, however, I have seen a possum in the barn if I go there for something late in the evening. Will a possum hurt tractors and such or should I ignore it? I assume it is eating food I leave once a day for the cats. Maybe I should feed the cats a smaller portion several times a day, so the possum doesn't have as much chance to get their food?

Possums are quiet sneaky creatures. They don't generally do harm, but around antique vehicles they can be a severe problem. They have a fondness for rubber and will chew on it and actually eat it. They don't like neoprene however. So if your old tractor has old tires made of rubber, the possums could possible chew them up pretty bad, even put holes in em. They won't touch neoprene though, so if you have newer tires you got nothing to worry about. On old tires, I would suggest painting them with hot pepper sauce, so they are discouraged from eating the rubber.

Years ago when I had small acreage, I decided to buy some chickens that were advertised in the local paper, upon arriving at the ladys house we went to the chicken house, ( just getting dark) we heard a co-motion inside and when we went inside there was a possum inside collecting eggs. soon as the light went on the possum fell to the ground, we figured it had a heart attack, went outside to get the shovel returmned within a minute and nowhere was the posum to be found.( playing posum)

Another time went visiting at my brothers and turned into the driveway only to find one on the back fence, as long as we kept the light on it never moved ( best way to shoot , don't know if it is legal), turned off headlights and it continued on it's way.

They are an amazing creature, suvived for thousands of years, I don't hink it matters what you do to get rid of them they will always be around, carefull not to get bit or get to cloose to them for deases.

...kill the rodent!

She hates Opossums, which is odd, since any other small furry animal is considered beautiful in her eyes. As a matter of fact, I had to go pull her car out of a field once because a squireel ran in front of her car. I have also seen her swerve out of her lane to hit an Opossum. When she was a child growing up in Georgia, she used to throw golf balls at them and would gleefully laugh when she would hit one, making it turn to her and hiss.

I got a neighbor up the road that tried to kill one in his garage by leaving his lawnmower running inside with the doors closed. I don't recomend that method. However a 20 gauge shotgun shell with number 4 shot is a good prescription.

Pick him up by the tail and smash his head into a treetrunk. No point wasting good powder and shot.

If you have horses, or neighbor's with horses, do all of you a favor and kill the D&^n thing. They can and do transmit an organism that causes a neurological disorder in horses called EPM. Equine Protozal soemthingorother. It's a bad deal.

We lost a beautiful horse to epm three years ago.The disease is transmitted from birds to possums via their feces, and horses can get it from contaminated grain or even hay. Possums didn't exist west of the Mississippi until a couple decades ago, and literally are overrunning the West now. Kill the varmints!!

Somehow, after my mother was finished baking possum or muskrat, it just tasted like roast beef.
Cat tastes like chicken. Seriously!

Why not?? Cats are eaten in many countries. You are right, they taste like chicken! If you have ever been in Asia, and eaten meat from street vendors, you may have inadvertantly eaten cat! Please don't flame me..I own several cats, love them to death. But, the "animal rights a******" haven't gotten as big a foothold over there as here! But, it's coming, although slowly! I'd post the cat song but can't locate it... The picture is me many years ago, holding Chessie, my favourite cat!! Dead now, of course.

It ain't worth the risk having them around. Kill it and dispose of it without touching it or anything else that comes into contact with it (until you disinfect it).

These critters will attack even if they aren't rabid. They also love crawling up onto warm tractor and car engines at night when it's cold.

You can reach up to turn on your gas shutoff valve and get bitten.

Ha! Just had this problem last night... the dogs were going crazy, so I got the spotlight to see what was going on, and they had this Grinner cornered in the woodshed. 1 shot from my trusty 10/22 and problem solved. Now what the heck am I going to that slimy nasty thing? Maybe I'll put it up on eBay... :-)

PS... Mushrooms are poppin... if you listen close at night, you can hear them jumping up through the leaves... as soon as I finish this I'm out to the woods to fill up a walmart bag with them!

My dog was giving her "another animal is out there" bark the other night and I found a possum in the garden. It refused to run from me and I had to literally roll the critter about forty yards into the woods with a broom. They are really stupid and ugly but I didn't feel like shooting it. If you shoot everything stupid and ugly, I might be an endangered species.

I just discovered last night that I have racoons in my barn, also. I had thought it was ground hogs until I saw a masked face come out when I poured amonia into the hole.

Reminds me of the old joke:
Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: To show the possum (or racoon) that it COULD be done.

Dennis ,You might try a " Live Trap " and when you get him take him far far away, this way no one feels bad about killing an animal that is doing its thing , as Nature intended .

I understand what you are saying, and you are right. However, to quote from a famous philosopher (can't remember the name right now) "Nature without man is not nature at all". Which is something most people who have spent their lives in an urban environment can not understand.

Last year I caught a hugh coon in a live trap. Then I was at a loss in what to do with it. Should I drive down the road and dump the problem on another's land or kill it. After several hours I killed it and a new family of red tail hawks really appreicated it.

There goes Pogo, Just be careful his buddy Albert the aligator don't get even. Shoot the darned thing if it is rabid or has mange. You could have a big problem. Do not handle it, use a shovel then disinfect the shovel. Wild animals don't normally come near humans unless they are sick.

Yuk! I'll stick with Angus prime-rib RED MEAT! We had one around the barn for about 2 weeks, but as soon as it warmed a bit, he took off for the deep, dark forest and we haven't seen him since.
