Tom - replacing points is no big deal - new set of points is cheap - I just got a master-tune-up kit at TSC that had points, rotor, distr. cap, condensor, and sparkplugs for 29 bucks - well worth the money. Start by removing the coil (large black square on top of the distributor) - it is held to the distributor with a bailer handle that you pry forward. The coil can then be placed on top of the fan belt. The the dist. cap is held on by two clips, one each side. Undo the clips and let the cap hang from the spark plug wires. Then remove the rotor by slipping it forward. Remember which way it is pointing! Then remove the distributor by loosening the two bolts that hold it to the block. Now take it to a good light source and examine. If the points are black, it is time for a new set. Most Ag/Farm stores have them, even some auto parts stores. If they look good, shiney, clean, then replace the distributor, rotor, cap, and coil and try taking a voltage reading at the top of the coil; with points open, you should get 12 volts or 6 volts, depending on your conversion. Voltage should be less with points closed - that may take turning the engine or rocking it by hand with it in gear. These voltage readings will be necessary in determining your 12 volt conversion.
