Leveling Box

I have two questions concerning the leveling box assembly on my 49 8N. The leveling gear shaft (part no 579) is slightly bent. Has anyone straightened one of them? Any recommendations on how to do it.

Also, the leveling gear box contacts the rear axle when the lift is in the lowest position. The chain is tight and the gear box just touches but without any significant pressure. How far from the rear axle should the box be when it is in the lowest position?

Yes you can straighten the rod if it is not too sharply kinked. Put it in a HD vice near the bend and use a heavy hammer and wood block to bump it straight. Or if you wish you can put it in a vice and heat it to straighten. If your lift is working properly and you leave it in position control the lift rods will not contact the axle. If you leave it in draft control the lift arms are allowed to drop 3" lower thus you will get contact with the axle.

Thanks. I try to learn at least one new thing each day. I guess I can go take a nap now. I have the tractor in the shop trying to change the right rear seal. If I can ever get the hub off I assume the rest will be pretty easy. When I get it all back together, I will try switching from draft to position and see what you are describing. Again, thanks.
