Both of the ships I was on have websites even though the ships themselves are gone now.
From the sites I learned that I was eligible for a couple of medals/ribbons that I didn't even know about and found the place where
you can write to to get replacement medals and/or
any that you didn't get issued.
It's a Government site.
See link below.
Got out wearing only 2 but was supposed to have gotten 2 more.
So today in the mail there's a package with all 4 medals in it. Still have some old patches and insignia in the closet somewhere so I think I'll make one of them
little glass faced boxes to put on the wall in the den.
If you write to them though you better be patient.
I wrote to them EIGHTEEN MONTHS ago.
I'd nearly forgotten about it.

Thanks for posting this site. My dad was enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War, he spent about two years fighting there. Now, during the latter part of his life, he is interested in what decorations his units of assignment were awarded.
Thank you very much.

Wasn't looking for praise or thanks guys.
There's lots of guys are vets out there and some of them saw real action and had it a lot worse than I did. I had it pretty easy really.
I guess I just posted that because I wanted to share the link with others who might want to write themselves. Thanks though.
Jerry

Every one who served this great country deserves praise, whether you were a mess hall cook or a medal of honor winner. You deserve our thanks. I am not ashamed of our military, as is many here on this board and I am honored that you shared your story with us. I applaude your modesty. Most of our vets, check out Tom Brokaw's book "The greatest Generation", the horror many went through and they never told anyone. God, what real men we have in our military. Modest heros, all of you. Thank you for sharing.

I sent the adddress to my little brother, He was in the Navy for about 12 years. What ships were you on?

My brother was on the USS IWO JIMA several years ago.

Thanks for Defending Our Great Nation

I spent about nine months on a Battalian Landing Team in 1967. We made "beach landings" into hot combat zones in Viet Nam. Most of the time we operated off of the Okanawa(sp), but for about two months, we operated from the Iwo Jima. Both ships are helicopter carriers. I guess that was before your brother's service. Great ships.Glad to know that the She is still afloat. I developed a great respect for Navy personnel during that time. They really treated us (Marines)like family. My wife has been bugging me to replace my lost medals. I am glad to get the info on this site. I hope your brother has or gets an N tractor. They offer about the most fun you can have while doing real work. Sorry to be so long.

My brother was on the IWO JIMA back around 83.

(IWO JIMA provided command control and logistic support for the U.S. contingent of the Multi-National Peacekeeping Force. While there, IWO JIMA also provided medical support to the Marines wounded in the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut.)

That Piece was from the IWO JIMA website.

Have a Great Easter WeekEnd
