Trying to start my 52 8N, It's been sitting for about 8 years. Took hood and tank off & have a small tank mounted above carb. Installed new wiring harness, key switch, guages, plugs, wires, points, condensor. It has about 90 lbs of compression dry.It will start (6-volt& new cables)if I hold my hand over the carb while cranking but only run for a few seconds. This thing is driving me nuts, do you think it could be the float in the carb? Donn

Check your filter in carb at elbow, sounds like you are starving it.

Certainly sounds like a fuel issue. Seems to me that when you put your hand over the air intake, that would make the fuel mix richer, kinda like choking it. And you also say that the effect is temporary. Perhaps, the gaskets at the manifold are worn out. I understand that spraying WD40 on the gaskets can seal them up temporarily. Try that, and if it works try replacing the gaskets.

Could be. If it's been sitting for 8 years, I think there might be a carb cleaning due. Gasoline will varnish up after a few months and clog the little fuel and air passages inside the carb. Probably has less to do with the float level, more with cleaning.
