All, I was wondering why I have to rev up my engine before the Alt starts alternating... My little dummy lite stays on till the engine is reved up then you see the light go out and the alt squeal under load, bring the rpms back down and the alt purrs like a kitten. I bought the "N" with a botched 12 volt conv. I used the resources here to try and do it right. I have been running the alt. this way for about a year now. First it would not work at all, found the battery that the botcher put in was fried. I redone the wiring and new battery and all is honky dorry now..

I had that same trouble with the alt. not putting out until the engine was in high RPMs. I took the alt. to an auto electric shop and they were able to put in a new regulator? that made the alternator kick in at a lower RPM. It has worked fine for 6 months. Cost about $35. HTH jp

The altenator is not like a generator. You have to get up the RPM's to "excite" it. A generator is you might say, continously "excited" it will product current at almost any speed. You are hooked up right.

My 2N is 12V, not by my doing, but appears to be done right. It has a "weather proof" button I push to make the alternator start alternating after the tractor is started and running.

Johnny,
After reading this and your post below I think that if I ever convert my 2N to 12V I will have a button like yours to excite the alternator.
I kind of like some of the oddball stuff on these tractors. Like the guy who has the Ferguson pedals
on his 8N or the ones that are painted totally wrong. There's lots of them that are perfect.
Can't tell them apart after a while.
Having to push that button gives it a little character. Makes it an old tractor and not a new car. And it probably works just fine.
PS
You forgot the cruise control, air cond. and radar detector.

There is no right or wrong...What would you say if when you bought a new car and the salesman told you that you would have to push a button to start the alternator? This button stuff is just a way to manually excite the alternator and would not be right for me. As long as you are happy with it, is all that counts.

I meant it was converted in such a manner that it works and there are not strange mangled piles of wires sticking out everywhere. Some guys around here would disagree with "there is no right or wrong". They would say any 12V N is wrong.

Personally, I like the 12V option. Other than enough juice for a good haligen light, it gives me the ability to install: a pump for a wetbar, motor for the moon roof, a neon framed license plate, power windows and locks, electric motor powered hydraulic shocks, a stereo system which will shake the windows out of the neighbors house, a rotating disco ball and fog machine, tv with dvd/vcr, microwave, mini-refrigerator, and about 1,000,000 other things out of J C Whitney's catalouge. A virtual low riding, booty shaken, full equipped party'N machine. And all at the touch of a button.

If memory serves, our old Farmall H had a rotating dial that would increase the charge rate from 0 to about 10 amps.

It was pretty inconvienient.

I understand that is one of the drawbacks to the alternator with built in voltage regulator - have you tried a smaller pulley to increase its RPMs at lower engine rpms?
