I'm Thinking Tow Dolly, and If Not, Why Not???

A quick update.. In calling on a 200.00 9N with no hydraulics, It turns out that the owner also has a Jubilee, (1954 NAA I believe) and it's complete and looks good! I procured it for 900.00. The fellow inherited the farm and wants to get rid of most of the "old stuff" that was there. It hasn't run for a few years, but the oil is clean and the tin is good. Tires are checked but hold air.
My problem: Getting the sucker home. It's about 20 miles and all I have is a puny 1993 Toyota truck with a tired clutch. In checking the archives, all I can find is not to use a tow dolly when moving a tractor, but I couldn't find a reason.. I've used them before for moving cars and they work pretty good.
Is it because of the tall tires? Or maybe the low gearing? I plan on not going over 35 mph. What are some of your thoughts?

Thanks.
Chuck

All good reasons. Thanks. The high speed had crossed my mind, but the weight, non-locked steering, the momemtum of the CC filled tires; never thought about it.
Actually, I'm going to pass on the 9N..I think it's beyond my capabilities. And he has 4 or 5 more just like it!
Also, Justin, thanks for the Jubilee info. I thought the NAA's were also referred to as Jube's. Other than the trim, isn't the '53 and the '54 the same tractor?

Yup, same tractor just different emblems. For collectors the Jubilee is worth more because it is the anniversary model, but for everyday use they are identical. Congrats again on the find, I just located a Jubilee that I'm looking to buy but the price is about 3 times what you found.

Darrel, all of the reasons given have been good
ones and of course saftey is always a top concern.
But another problem with towing long distance is
lubrication. The tranny is designed to be splash
lubed. This system does not work properly when the
tractor is being towed. The result could be a locked bearing or worse. Hauling is the best way.
Good Luck.

You may even find a company with a roleback long enough to haul both tractors at the same time if they are loaded tightly together. There are a lot of rolebacks these days that haul two small cars at the same time on the same bed. It's worth a try.

Chuck,
Main reason for not using a tow dolly is when do you think was the last time that tractor went 30 MPH? It tops out around 15 mph, it isn't built to go any faster. If it's like the 8N and 9N I bought, the wheel bearings were already in rough shape.

Rent a trailer and take it easy or have some one haul it on a rollback.

Where are those guys that just want to get rid of the old junk when I'm looking for a tractor? Good luck,

Mike

Can you imagine what it would be like if one or both of those dry rotted, calcium filled tires let go at 35 mph.

First, just as a matter of specifics, if that second tractor is a '54 NAA then it does not get the Jubilee name. It's simply an NAA. Same tractor, but the Jubilee name only applied to the '53 year for Ford's 50th anniviversary.

As for the tow dolly, are you talking about the type that usually hold the front wheels of the automobile only while the rear wheels are still on the ground? If so, the first problem I see (and I've never tried it) is that the steering on the tractor can't be locked which could allow the rear of the tractor to swing around and possibly jack-knife especially when stopping or going around curves.

Second, that tractor is probably close to your truck's weight and could pose all sorts of handling and stopping problems unless you have a trailer with it's own brakes. It sounds like you are getting a steal for the price on these 2, spend a little and rent something big enough to safely move them. Tell the rental place you are moving a classic car because some don't like machinery on their trailers.

Good luck, Justin

And worth every dime of it!! $75 is cheap. If you can't haul it right pay to get it done right. To many people out there to risk hurting & the damage done to your tractor isn't worth it. My shop is less than a 1/4 mile off hwy. 2 & I watched a guy tow a N east on a dolly & acouple days I seen it headed back west & then being hauled both ways on a trailer. Got curious & called a good friend at Adams tractor & he had brought it back for rearend noise. First trip was a tune up & they warned him about the dolly thing. not sure how far he towed it but the tractor shop is at least 35-40 miles from me. These bearings may last forever but weren't made to do high speeds. Just my opinion. Play safe.
