After replacing a leaky head gasket and manifold gasket in my '44 2N Ford, I find that I can't get it to start. I replaced the plugs and have fire to them. The gas tank is clean and free of dirt.
I noticed that someone had inserted a plastic fuel filter in the line. I replaced the fuel line and removed this filter and the carb is getting a steady fuel flow. What is the proper way to set the carb's fuel and air screws. Do I have to rebuild the carb? Any suggestions? Help!

I was as scared as you are, but don't worry, it is easier than you think. Click on tune ups on the left side of this page. It is a duplicate of the manual. Follow the instructions and I'll bet your tractor will start right up. When you have the dist. off check it to make sure that the brass bearings are OK, by attempting to push the shaft back in forth. If no play in the shaft then it's OK. If a lot of play in the shaft then the bearings need replacing. It's easy. I'd bet that after you put in new points, rotor and cap it will start. If not check or replace the resister behind the dash that reduces the voltage to 3.5 volts. If it is bad, sometimes the tractor starts and sometimes not. You may even want to jump the resister(temporary)and only for a short time, to give you the full 6 volts to the coil. I installed a push pull switch on my dash to jump the resister when the temperature gets down around zero or below. I use this only to start the tractor and once it's running put it back to normal. You may have other problems, but your starting in the right place. Good Luck

Sonny..... ...One of the founding N-Board members claimed 80% of all N-Carb problems were found in the ignition system. I would not suggest you rebuild your carb at this time.

I'd set the idle mixture to 1 1/2 turns, the main jet to 1 1/2 turns, the idle speed on the backside of the carb to 2 turns. I'm gonna assume you know how to adjust a carb. Max idle rpms 450 to 500 which is awfully sllooowwww sounding to our modern V-8's or sewingmachine 4 cylinders.

Are you getting any suck at your carb throat when you crank yer engine? Ya changed yer manifold, you could have a bad gasket somewhere and no suck.

Howsomever, if'n ya had good suck, you just might haff flooded yer sparkies. Modern no-lead gas has funney additivies that gunkup the sparkies and lets all the sparkle leak off. Change your sparkies for new ones. They're not that expensive..... ...Dell

Thanks for your response Del. I have suction to the carb. And I've changed the plugs. All I can think of now is the points. Thanks again for the info on the carb settings. I'll do my best. I appreciate your time.

Sonny..... .I know you said you had changed you sparkplugs before you posted. I said if'n possibility that you might have flooded yer engine, then the modern no-lead gas additives have contaminated yer BRAND NEW sparkies and all the sparkles leaking off to ground. Change 'em again. Then bless 'em with a whiff of ether quick-start..... ....Dell

Sonoffo . try squirting starter fluid in air intake , if she fires , you got a fuel problem , if it wont fire I would go with a new coil or set of points. ( fire at plugs dont mean its hot enough to run the tractor , could be weak spark ) A compression check would tell a lot also .Dont know without seeing it in person . Good luck .

Thanks for the tip fast ed. I did as you suggested and the tractor still won't fire. I have suction into the carb, so I believe that the manifold gasket is OK. I replaced the spark plugs last week. As for the points, I've never changed or worked on them in my life. This was my Grandpa's favorite tractor and I'm afraid to mess it up. However, I will try to change the points if you can guide me through it. Again, thank you for your time. My email is [email protected]

Sonoffo, If you go to the top of this page and go to archives , It has a wealth of information on tune up specks ect. . To replace points , remove front mount dist . ( take off wire on top of coil , mark plug wires and remove at dist cap ,loesten generator so you have slack in belt ,remove it , snap off wire holder on top of coil with short screwdriver, Remove two 7 16 ts bolts , one on each side of dist. the dist. will now pull out straigh forward , its kind of short. It will only go back in one way, dont worry , If you never replaced points id take it somewhere and have it done, but its not that hard . good luck
