As you all know by now, I am still just starting to learn about this machine o' mine so here is another example of my ignorance. My neighbor and I have an ongoing argument regarding the N's. I say that my 44 2N never had a key he says it did. Of the tractors that I have seen, it seems to me that keys did not appear until the hundred series. If I'm right I get to gloat, if I'm wrong, I get to lie...(he still has not found this site)You guys are great! Thanks...Bill-AZ

The N series have a key. As they are prone to fail many were removed and replaced with a toggle or something. One key fits every switch from 1939 to 1964. It's stamped A1053

I've tried to keep my tractors with A1053 but too often when I needed a new switch, FNH and local suppliers only had C250 or IC009. I now carry one of each at all times (they are in my pocket right now). How many times that I have seen a tractor for sale and there was no one around to start it. If it is close by, I might go back. If it is quite far away, I'll try one of my keys unless it has a toggle or push-pull switch. I bought one that had a house wall switch for ignition.

Thanks, Don. I have found a source. I have two to change over so that one key fits all.

There is an older guy down here who has a boneyard full of old Fords. He told me a story once of a guy sold him an old 9N which had the original key switch replaced with the ignition switch from a GMC pickup (unbeknownst to him bypassing the safety interlock). He said he was standing beside it when he put the key in the switch to keep from loosing it. He must of turned it a bit as it started up and took off, ran over him, ran into another old tractor parked right in front of it, leaving the old guy pinned under the spinning back wheel. By the grace of God, it stalled out and he was left there for a couple hours until his son came home. Fortunately, badly skinned and bruised, but no broken bones or other physical damage.

I was luckier. A tractor that I bought had an ignition key but the original starter button was bad and someone had put a push button on the dash.
I had a lapse of thought and, while standing on the ground, I turned on the key and hit the starter button, the tractor was in gear.
The tractor moved and so did I. I reached back to the key and turned it off.
Then, after cleaning my shorts, I went to NFH and bought a new starter button and trans cover gasket and installed them.
