Just Found A New Leak

Engine's out and inside the transmission housing where the clutch forks and throw-out bearing are is a cover that's attached to the transmission with (4) bolts. After having cleaned everything real good I can now see that there's a leak from this cover. Can I remove this and put in a new gasket, or is there something else that I need to do? I don't want to get into a transmission rebuild if I can help it.

Greg, There are two places associated with this cover that may be "leaking".
1. Gasket area - where the cover "input shaft housing" attaches to the tranny case with four bolts. This is a thin paper gasket that is very inexpensive. Should be replaced if leaking or the cover is removed for any reason.
2. Tanny input shaft seal (I believe this is what Dell was refering to). It is located inside the housing cover and keeps tranny fluid from leaking out around the input shaft. This would be visable at the front of the housing where the shaft exits to connect with the clutch disk. If any evidence of leakage is coming out at this area - IT IS HIGHLY recommended you replace - an easy fix - similar to the PTO seal or an inner wheel bearing seal. Just pull the old one out, make sure the shaft surface where the seal "rides" is clean and free of rust/dents/corrosion/whatever and reinstall new seal.

Also make sure to note (with good diagram or picture) the "correct" assembled positions of the throwout bearing, engaging fork and springs. Easier to put back together the correct way the first time - you don't what to have to break the cases apart a second time like ME. Good luck, Jim

Greg, you should replace both of those, but also the one your talking about as well. Mine also leaked but no one seems to mention this, it takes the same gasket as the input shaft, also I highly recommend the use of high temp. oil and gas resistant silicone sealant. Now don't go crazy with this stuff just a small amount will do.
