Bought a 48 8n last year in the fall so did not have to much time to play with it. Was doing some light grading this afternoon and when I parked it there was a big time leak around the hub of the rear wheel. The seller said that the rear seals were replaced.Could they have failed after light use or what. I am just about to get out of the tractor hobbie.Larrys8n

Larry, 47- early 49 8ns are known for bad axle seals. Push sideways on your wheel. If you hear a popping soundthen either your hubs are worn or lose. Go down to the axle nut and see how many washers are behind it. If there's only one take the nut off and add one or two. If your brakeshoes are new take them off and soak them in gas to remove the oil. When you put it back together use a big wrench with a cheater bar as you can't over tighten them. These rear axle seals are the reason 47-49 8ns loose there brakes. The only other way to cure this problem I know of is to switch it to late model axles and that ain't cheap. John

Where did you learn that fix John? no wonder you think you have to update them to later axles and housings. believe me you don't need to do that.

Once again somebody thought fixing 8N axle seals was just "replacing a seal" there is alot more to be done to keep them from leaking, check shimming, check for cracked shims, hub spline wear, axle spline wear, brake plate mounting bolts, check how many and where seals and gasket are for your year 8N, do not use silicone, do not reuse the shoes, and on and on, to do it correctly which I have not seen many do.

N tractors are fun little machines, they just need some TLC. Replacing the rear seals is not a hard job, just takes a little time. However, if the hub is worn where the old seal had rubbed, there might be enough of a groove so that a new seal would not seal. In that case, you probably will need a new hub, about $60. Once you have it fixed, however, it will be fixed for quite a while. Get a shop manual if you don't already have one, and let these fellows on this board give you the benefit of their experience. Before you know it, you'll be hooked. Rikiz
