All you had to say was yes.(%^) I got a good laugh from the comedians and good information from the serious ones. THANKS GUY'S! I knew I could count on ya. No, I'm perfectly happy with the 6V. I just wandered what it would take--to get ya'll going. Heh,heh. Of course, now I do have Dell's consent. I've thought about a cigarette lighter, radar detector, cell phone charger,etc.. DON TX

My Dad rigged up a 53 chev with two 6V batteries. He had a big two pole knife switch that had to be switched to the battery you wanted to charge. There was also a button that had to be held down when you started the car. Dad was pretty inventive, but did not always take the most straight forward approach. He did not have any trouble with it, but one time I ran both batteries down trying to start it. Also ran down the spare battery in the trunk.

I'm with ya don - about a month ago I had a similar idea. I wondered if there would be a way to keep the 6 volt electrical system yet have 12 volts to run accessories. My thought was connecting the batteries in paralel for charging and starting, then in series for 12 volt equipment.

Sounds like it should work. Claus even posted a pic of a wiring device that handled the connection. Then someone e-mailed about a 6/12 volt battery that uses 12 to start, then puts out 6 to run.

And of course the JC Whitney catalog has a power inverter that will boost 6 volts to 12 volts for those antique car enthusists who want to run a 12 volt stereo. Of course they said the inverter wouldn't work for things like power window motors so I guess sprayers are out.

As for where to put the extra battery, I thought either your lap, under the seat, or bungee corded to the left axle trumpet.

This wheel has been invented already. A switch to do what you propose exists--along with a six/twelve battery at www.antiqueautobattery.com

On the other hand, a well maintained six volt system should need no help unless you have some twelve volt accessory like a sparyer you want to run.

you could get an isolator similar to those used in RV's charge two batteries use one for starting and one to run accessories, probably marine applications also. A lot of the big deere's use two 6V series to make 12V, we eliminated one battery and used a single 12V battery. starts easier and less parts to replace!!

I know some of them big 18 wheeler diesels rigs do something like that so they get 25 volts to crank their engines.

But why go to all that trouble. If'n ya wants to run on 12 volts, convert to 12 volts. Whole lots simpler and cheeper (and I won't hold it against ya)..... ...Dell

Hummm...
If you put 2 6's in parallel and isolated the 12V aux with diode ...nah.....

How about the Bob Thing.....a small alternator in addition to the generator....nah..... .

A big generator that runs off the rear tire....nah....

I got it...4 ea. 3V piezo pistons that generate 12V from the shock in the cylinder explosions!
I'll let you know when I get it working.....
(Hope your' not TOO old...this may take a while.

Havin' fun,

If you hooked 2 6V's in series you could crank the starter w/12V and wire the ignition to only 1 6V.Not sure about isolation(BIG diode?). You would have to switch generator from 1 battery to the other to keep charged. You could get very creative with the wiring, or just check some sites on RV's. They sometimes run multi 12V's. That said, I hope you are just dreaming and not serious. 80)

I finally converted my 2n to 12v last fall.I am happy with the results in that it gives me good lights, heater & defrosters & windshield wipers, but it always started good on 6v, so there is no improvement there.

I'd say it's worth it if you get the heater, defroster and wipers!
