Found part of my power problem in the #3 & 4 plug wires were crossed. That took care of the power problem, however still having the problem with it cuting out. Starts and runs fine for awhile, like 5 or 10 minutes, then starts to cut out and finaly dies. Thought at first it might be electrical. Put it back in the pole barn and connected a plug monitor to #4 cyl. This is the type of unit that has a light and connects between the plug and plug wire. Started the tractor and watched the light, good strong light all the way through until the tractor quit running. Seems to happen faster at full throttle than at idle. Seems to be a fuel problem. Pulled the sediment bowl and cleaned it out. Found ice in the oil bath cleaner and also the pre-cleaner. Cleaned both out and used 13w30 oil in the oil filter as I was out of 30w. I have an inline filter, new this year. No filter in the carb inlet elbow any more. I'm thinking this is a fuel problem, but lost as to as where to go. The longer I let it sit after it dies the longer it will run once I start it back up. If it starts to die, if I take the load off and play with the throttle and choke I can keep it running a little bit longer, but it will still die out. Any and all suggestions will be appreicated, would like to get the rest of the snow out of my drive.

Thanks in advance
Bill

If you can keep it running ( when it acts up ) spray starting fluid into the air intake , if it keeps running you got a fuel problem. Good luck .

O/T...I keep wanting to quit, too!
I took this job over a year ago understanding it would be a challenge....wow, never dreamed it would be such a headache. Got auditors here now trying to decide whether we get to stay open another 3 months. (breathe deep, relax, it will all be OK).

This is more of a question for my personal knowledge than a solution. Other than the possible bad ignition switch, its sounds like the general consensus is fuel starvation. Could Bill's prob be the the air hole in thetop of fuel tank is clogged. Bill, have you tried running the tractor with the gas cap loosened?

I had same symptom on my 8N. First replaced the coil-No change. Second replaced elbow filter-No change. Third replaced sediment bowl filter and tank filter- No change. Fourth gutted up and throughly cleaned the fuel tank and coated with POR-15- runs good.

Sounds just like what my 2N did when I first got it! It turned out that when I took off the fuel bowl, there was a weed seed stuck in the place where the gas was supposed to drip into the bowl, the longer I let it set, the more gas would drip into the bowl and therefore, run longer. Might give it a peek, too. .....TG.....

Bill..... ..there are 2 time related "quits running" problems with N-Tractors. Both "cure" themselves innna couple hrs or overnight cooling off time. The longer it cools off, the longer it'll run after restarting.
1) quits after about 1 hr of runnin..... bad frontmount ignition coil, NOT yer described problem
2) quits after about 10-15 mins..... gunked up ignition switch. simple check. just jumper arount the ignition switch contacts when it happens, if'n starts right up, you know what to do.

Type and weight of oil in airfilter really isn't critical..... ....Dell

I had same problem, get rid of inline filter and replace the elbow on carb. The inline filter will not work on these why? I don't know but they make it quit running ,the longer it sits the more fuel you have drain down to carb.

Terry..... ..I have an inline paper gutts milky plastic fuel filter on my 52 8N and haven't noticed any problems. Maybe I got it installed correctly? dunnno..... ..Dell

But in my experience, 10 minute runnin problem is bad ignition switch gutts.

Turn off the fuel at the sediment bowl and pull the fuel line, open the valve. You should see big time flow. If not, it's line / valve / tank related. If you have good flow, check needle & seat valve in carb.

Good luck,

Arne

Bill,

I agree with Jim, it sure sounds like a fuel flow problem. When I first bought my 48 8N, it did the exact same thing. My problem was the fuel shutoff valve that screws into the tank. I replaced mine and it has been working fine for 2 years now. You don't by chance have an in-line filter added to the fuel line do you? If so, try removing it and see if it will continue to run. Most in-line filters are designed for a pressurized fuel system, not gravity feed.

Danny

Bill, keep on the fuel track. When it stops, pull the plug in the bottom of the carb. If gas pours out, it may not be fuel, but if it just drips out, you have a fuel starvation problem which is caused by restricted fuel flow from your tank.
Clean all 3 filters and see if you have fuel to keep it going.

I can see why you think it is fuel related - if I start my 2N and forget to turn on the fuel, I get about 60 seconds before it dies.

However, your statement that the longer it rests the longer it runs makes me think it might be your coil or maybe a bad ignition switch. Then again the resistor migbt be bad. Next time it dies, take a volt meter to the top of the coil with ign on and points closed. Let us know what you get.

I would start by replacing the coil.
