I recently pulled an engine from a pretty little Ford 2, 8, or 9N that was smoking real bad for my neighbor. The engine serial number doesn't have the 2, 8, or 9N in the number.
When I pulled the pistons the local Ford Store said that they were not stock Ford 3 ring pistons and he suspected that perhaps the engine was taken from other equipment and installed in the tractor. The tractor didn't have any sleeves in it and the Piston diameter was larger than stock Ford pistons. The dealer told me he thought they were Mercury Car pistons. Have any of you experts encountered any situations similar to what I have just described? As a side note, I am having it bored to fit new sleeves and stock diameter 3 ring pistons. Thanks for any help you may have to offer.

Years ago in about 1960 oversize pistons with rings were sold by Tractor Supply Co. They were used to replace the thinwall sleves. I intalled a set in an "N". They didn't last very long as the cast cylinder walls were not hard as the sleves. This sounds like what you may have in your block.

Does the block have a plate riveted or rivet holes on the rear where it mounts to the trans.? Where the starter mounts does it have a large 8N on the block?

Neither, that I can recall seeing. The block is now at the Engine Rebuild Site so I can't check again.

It could have been the engine from a stationary piece of equipment like a cement mixer, generator or irrigation pump. It is not uncommon to see the sleeves pulled out and oversize pistons run in the bare block. Not a good idea IMO, but I think you're on the right track with new sleeves and 3-ring pistons.

bg, I thank you for your reply and this will be sweet little machine when I get it done. The EPA should be real happy too, the quality of the air will be a lot better after I get done with the fix here in Southern Wisconsin!!
