I have been tumbling this idea over in my head for the past few months and would like to hear any comments some of you might have about it.

This live PTO would be an attachement that would bolt to the lugs of one of the axle hubs and then the wheel would bolt to it. It would caust the wheel to be extended out some inches. It can be either hydraulic or mechanical. Hydraulic on the N tractor if it has LIVE THANG live hydraulics. Or mechanical if not. Would work with hydraulics on any tractor that already has live hydrauics.

The hydraulic one would require a hydraulic hose to be routed outside the wheel to the center of the hub to route pressure to the clutch pack.

The mechanical one would be operated by a lever that that engaged a fork to a slot in a ring that would be used to disengage a spring loaded set of dogs to stop the tractor and allow the PTO to continue to turn. When the implement was cleared then the clutch would have to be disengaged in order to re-engage the dogs on the live PTO adapter.

The hydraulic model could be shifted on the move in or out.

What about it ????? ?????

Ya it would work but I'd be alittle concerned on the wear and tear of the differential parts(side gears and such)Also this clutching idea of yours would'nt be much help if you needed to be shifting the tranny alot which would mean useing the tractors clutch and not your "Live Thang" clutch.

I would'nt do the cylinder lifting the rear tire off the ground trick, that sounds like a good way for a Beer drinking yahoo like myself to get hirt! LOL

I would like to see a cultch pack fitted internally similar to the system on the jubilee. If it could be constructed from mostly off the shelf parts and manufactured adapters. If you could perform this miracle and market it for 750.00 the demand would be phenomenal. It would need to have its own internal hyd pump ,be spring applied and hyd. released. I would purchase four of them to start. T.S.Dye

While you are brainstorming all these ideas right now, how about a step up step down trans? I can see lots of uses for that, at least the step down. While you are at it any way to make live pto through that. I'm no machanic so if I'm talking out my a@@ let me know. I just really like the idea of lower gears but, I don't want to go through the hassle of finding parts for stuff that has not been in production in decades.... ie sherman trans.

I have had an idea for a step down transmission that uses the same principal as the live PTO thing above and could be used on the other axle to reduce the ground speed by use of a planetary gear system at the wheel. This is not a new concept because most modern tractors already use this reduction system to allow the drive train to be much more compact and ecenomical to manufacture. Caterpillar uses this set up on all their doziers now to reduce the bulk of the transmission and steering clutches by making the final drive a planetary gear system instead of the old big bull gear and pinion that was full of pitfalls.

Hi Zane. I might be singin out'a tune here but kick the tires on this one. I get the feeling the plan is to put one or both of these attachments between the axel and wheel to interrupt or slow ground speed without slowing the pto. They could give the diff thrust washers and gears a good workout. I also get the feeling that a creep speed would be very popular. Why not put the two speed planetary on both ends of the axel, this would fit well into our goof proof world, the diff wouldn't know the diff and the live pto thang could be accomplished by shifting to low, this would cut the gear load in the trans way down so you could easily tap it into n without the clutch.
Just some junk food for thought. Bob

Many years ago in a farm magazine, There was a picture of a "live" PTO device. It was
a wheel and tire hinge mounted under the
rear axel and controled with hyd. This device simply lifted one wheel from the ground, let
it spin till the implement was cleared.
Then push in the clutch, let the tractor down
and go on.If you had an over run clutch on PTO so implement would not be driving wheel
when you let it down it would work ok

Hey that is a good idea. Instead of a wheel you could use a simple skit hinged at one end and operated with a hydraulic cylinder hooked to the lIVE THANG hydraulic system that could just be pushed down to raise on wheel a little like old blue does and then when you cleared the implement just let the wheel down and be on your way.

This is the way to go for the live PTO. KISS, (keep it simple stupit)

I'm going to experiment on the 8N and I will let you guys know how it works.

If you had a LIVE THANG and this WHEEL THANG, what would they operate??? Why would you need both ???

I think it would be great for a roto-tiller or even a brushhog that was really bogged down.

Sounds like a grate idea , very clever . I would have to see it in operation to offer my opinion . Keep them wheels in you head turning .
