I have acquired 30 acres which will have to brush hogged. Can someone tell me the approximate hours you would expect it to take with a 5 ft. brush hog on a 2N. Thanks for your comments.

Larry, Based on my limited two years of mowing with a 8N/5ft Hog combination on pasture grass that is 12 to 14 inches high, on level ground and no obstructions (big square flat open patch). the following is my rate of cutting

third gear - 2.6 acres per hour
second gear - 1.9 acres per hour (2nd NOT recommended by Dell and others)
first gear - 1.5 acres per hour

Have fun, Jim

Just a reminder - those gears are on an 8N - I wouldn't recomend bush hogging with a 2N in 3rd gear - ED

Ed, Larry

Ed is correct, I overlooked 2N (I was assuming again!) Using the 2N gear ratio I came up with these estimates

first gear - 1.4 acres per hour and
second gear - 1.8 acres per hour

Hope this helps, Jim

I strongly recommend that you walk the property first unless you are very familiar with it's past. I used to do a little hogging on the side and how many times I found steel or stones in places that the owner said was clean. Saves tire punctures and dulled blades. Either can ruin an otherwise nice day.

Also depends of what you are choppin. Grass/ brambles /shumach type stuff goes quick, and MIGHT be able to use second. Heavier stuff like little trees, can take a bit longer, and use first gear. Ask me how I know department; bring a whisk broom with you, and clean the radiator screen often. Especially with tall grass that has gone to seed. I mow my "lawn" with my 2N & 5' Woods mower in second gear. Two acres, two hours. That includes many trees, shrubs, the house, and cars in the driveway to avoid. Keep people away,,,the mowers can toss a couple pound rock like nothin.

I have 4 acres of just field grass with a couple of corners that are pretty rough. Depending on how tall I let the grass and clover get, with a 5' mower (bush hog) on my 9N it can take betwen 2 and a half and 3 hours. Kinda depends too on how much I want to bounce around.

Amen to all of that. I have hit cement blocks that became confetti and stones that split. Not very good for the blades and a very hard shock to the pto.

Larry..... ...kinda depends how fast ya wanna bounce across the ground. I figger it takes me about 1 hr per acre on my Rocky Ridge starvation grass pasture. It is not a billard table. I usually use 1st and under. Mow a buddies hay field and closer to 2 acres per hour. (or 1/2 hr per acre for the mathamatically challenged).

Just be certain you have an Over Running Clutch on your tractors PTO to prevent expensive tranny noises and to prevent your brushog from backdriving your tractor when you slowdown to turn a corner around the barn, fencepost, creekbank, irrigation canal, wifes car (don't ask). $60 cheep, gettcha an ORC..... ...Dell, the self-appointed safety preacher

What Dell said. He's not kidding about an ORC. And you'll probably want one of the world famous Zane Thangs to keep the mower at the desired height.
