My tractor steers easy to the left, but when turning back to the right it seems to bind up and is very hard to turn the steering wheel. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if the 49's are the same gearbox or not as my 47 but I have a word of warning .. the top of the gearbox can be reassembled backwards.. all went together fine for me until I tried to get my dashboard back over the steering column and bolted to the steering gearbox. I swear the picture is wrong in my service manual of the assembled gearbox!!... anyway after tearing it all apart and reversing the top of the gearbox all went together smoothly.

I see as how you could put the top of the gear box on backwards and will take care to try to prevent that problem. Thanks for the help

As you have surmised something in the steering is binding. Over a fifty year life lots of things in the steering can get bent. Also joints like a shot of greese every twenty years or so. Easiest way to isolate the trouble is to jack all of the weight off the front end and see if you can see something binding. If not try disconnecting the drag links and see if that helps. If not it is likely in the steering box but I wouldn't tear into that until I did the above.

Thanks for your quick response. I already did everything that you said, and the steering turned fine. The steering only binds up when the front wheels have weight on them.

Now you see why I rely on Dell for all of my heavy duty mind reading. If you have been there on bent; broken; under lubed then Bill above has it nailed--top steering gear bearing
