I bought a 51 8N on ebay a couple of weeks ago from a New Holland dealer 400+ miles from my home. I put alot of trust into ebay and the information the seller listed as well as the 3 photos he showed. The tractor has some valuable (especially if sold separately on ebay) original items on it that I could see in the photos. I called the seller also to get more info. He had a good track record on ebay so I gambled and bid on the tractor. I was not dissapointed in the tractor when I got it home and paid a reasonable price for it (especially compared to prices of N's in central Iowa). I rented a Uhaul transport trailer to go pick up the tractor. I have seen many horror stories about Uhauls and transporting of tractors, but I had no problems. The transport I rented was the perfect size for the 8N and I got excellent service from the dealer. I pulled the tractor for over 400 miles behind my Jeep Cherokee (with 130,000 miles of a 4.0 litre engine) without any problems at all. My gas mileage dropped by about 30 percent but the most I payed for gas was 1.06/gal.

I have no ties to ebay or Uhaul and am not receiving any endorsement compensation. I just wanted you guys to know if you know what your bidding on and you know your tractors, you most likely won't get burned on ebay. Always check out the sellers feedback to protect yourself. As far as Uhaul goes, I'd like to buy a transport from them sometime and haul N's for people. It was fun and I only invested about $200 dollars in getting the 8N home (including rental, gas and 1 night motel). It would have cost me $500 to have it delivered. Just my $.01 worth...

The following is all true and unedited. FWIW.
Chuck
PS. UHaul forwarded us to the manager of the facility that was involved. His response was "We got robbed too."

Dear Uhaul,

This is quite lengthily, so please bear with us. Thank you.

Looking back over the past week, perhaps we should have used Ryder. On Friday 8/25/2000, I went to one of our local Uhaul centers here in our small town of Oakdale CA to reserve a 17-foot truck to be picked up on Monday afternoon. The man there said there was no need to reserve one, since they always have plenty after the weekends. After still requesting to reserve one, he said to just leave our name and phone number and they will call us when one arrived. After leaving their station, I went home and still was not comfortable with what transpired, since it was important to have one guaranteed. We have used Uhaul many times in the past and had never experienced a problem with making a reservation.
I called the other center here and they said to just come down and leave a deposit of 80.00 and they will have it reserved. I went down just to be told the man who knew how to do it was not there, but yes, he would be there the following morning. I went to their center on Saturday morning. “No problem”, he said and began the paperwork. After about 10 minutes, he asked if I would be happy with a 14-foot model instead. I told him no, we were moving my mother-in-law and she had a large triple-wide mobile home with a lot of belongings. He told me that a 14-foot would hold just as much as a 17 foot. I’m not too intelligent, but even my feeble mind knew that was not true. Well, he didn’t have a 17-foot model, but their other location in Modesto did. I said great, could you have it here in Oakdale by Monday. Modesto is farther away and would add too much to the mileage. No, he could not do that; I would have to go get it. I passed.
I went home and on Monday morning I called the first place I went to. No, they never have any 17-foot models there. I told him how the conversation went on Friday, and he said, well, it wasn’t him who told me that. In the meantime, my mother-in-law called the main Uhaul number to get a reservation for one in Hayward. She was told she would be contacted by their local center at 529 Jackson Ave. in Hayward. It would be more expensive to rent it one way but we had no other options. After not hearing from them, she called the main office again and they were surprised the local office had not called her back. They assured her there was a truck for her there. She called the Hayward center and a young man named Steven said no, there was no truck for her. She called the main office again, and again they seemed surprised. The main office called back, said yes, there is a truck for her and at 6:15 PM, we arrived to get the truck. There were two employees there; Steven and Mahur.
It gets worse.

Steven was busy watching the clock and you could tell he was eager to get out of there. Mahur did all the paperwork and answered the phone that was constantly ringing. Steven went outside, I assume to get the truck. The issue with Steven might be moot since I doubt if he is still working there.
At 6:58, 43 minutes after we arrived, Steven was back in behind the counter with Mahur. A man runs in with a gun and shouted “Everyone on the ground.” My wife, mother-in-law, and myself hit the floor. The robber was wearing a motorcycle helmet, ski mask, gloves, and a jumpsuit. He told us to empty our pockets and put them on the floor. I put my wallet on the floor and he quickly grabbed it and yanked my mother-in-law’s purse from her shoulder. He then went behind the counter and told them to open the cash drawers and safe. The three of us were still on the other side of the counter crouched down and did not see what happened next. Apparently, Steven didn’t move fast enough because we heard a thud and heard Steven cry out in pain. The robber had hit him with the pistol. Blood was streaming down the side of his head.
He then ordered us to go into the back room and close the door. When he looked in there, he saw a fax machine, VCR and monitor. While he was attempting to destroy it all, Steven closed the door from the outside, leaving Mahur and the three of us inside the office along with the robber. Steven then ran out of the building and got away. The robber, after noticing Steven escaped, ran out, got on his motorcycle and sped away.
Mahur went out and checked to make sure he was gone and then told us it was okay to come out. He then called the police and reports were taken.
Our compliments go to Mahur. We were impressed with his eagerness to help us even before the robbery. During and after the robbery, he stayed cool and collected. He kept apologizing to us. Steven of course had a right to terrified. He was just pistol whipped, after all. And by him running out like he did caused the robber to leave. However, I don’t believe that was his intention by closing us up in the office with the robber. The three of us jump whenever we hear a motorcycle. He has both my mother-in-law’s and our address. We cannot sleep at night. I lost approximately 80.00 and a payroll check for 309.00. My mother-in-law lost her purse with approximately 100.00 in it. She had to pay a locksmith 198.00 to have new car keys made for her car. We also had to cut a lock on her storage shed in order to get into it. Her original keys were in her purse. My mother-in-law is still in the house, alone, living in constant fear. Fortunately, her wallet with her credit cards and driver’s license was on the counter and was overlooked.
On a side note, the truck had terrible headlights that pointed almost directly down onto the road, which made visibility difficult and it badly needs new shocks.
Returning the truck proved uneventful.
Even though Uhaul was not responsible for the robbery and terror we encountered, we feel you have some sort of liability for what happened. If the two agents in Oakdale had kept their word, we would have rented the truck here and never been to the agent in Hayward.

Sincerely,

Glad to hear of your experience and that everything worked in your favor. I am sure you will enjoy your 8 n. Your good trip will be a memory that you will always cherish as part of your fun with the 8n. Good luck, Cheers, Murray
P.S. I am sure most of us do not want to cause an accident and keep safety as our main priority.

hc,
I'm curious as to the rated horsepower of the 4.0 in the JEEP. Do you know offhand what it is?

I do not know what Dave's year of his Jeep is but I bought a brand new one in 1991 and the first outing with it going up a FOUR WHEEEL DRIVE ROAD up a mountain ( not muddy but dry) 3 miles long and half-hour climb my Jeep heated up, now only 24 hours after I bought it. Mine had 190 HP. After returning it dealers several times (10 or more times) they claimed they never did find out what was causing it to heat up. One year after I sold it, after meeting another person who also had the same problem found out they were known for that fault and the fault was in the manufacturing, the head gasket was not designed properly. I've never had any luck with any Chrysler products, best service was Toyota, followed by Ford.
I don'thave anything to do with Chryslers any more.

I did the same thing last year - 8N, e-bay, U-haul - the sale worked out OK too. The 8N price was decent and overall cosmetic condition was fine, but the mechanical condition was overstated. Still a good deal though since I couldn't find any decent 8Ns in Colorado at a fair price. My point is this, though: the U-Haul trailer had worn-out tires and I blew one on the way home (about 600 miles one-way). The tow truck driver from a U-Haul store came out within an hour and brought a new tire and wheel and replaced it. He then proceeded to chew me out for hauling "farm equipment." I informed him it weighed much less than most cars and that I told U-Haul what I intended to haul when I rented it. He was still upset with me and rude. I will definitely rent elsewhere next time. You may have had a good experience with U-HAUL. I didn't. A couple summers back I rented a 12' box trailer to pull behind a Chrysler T&C van. It took two hours in the pouring rain for them to figure out why the lights kept blowing fuses in the car. When I returned the trailer at a different location, they wanted to charge me a cleaning fee and keep my deposit in order to clean out the dirt that was in the trailer when I rented it. I ended up talking to one of their corporate guys who didn't have the brains to solve the problem. I'll never do business with them again.

I was wondering if your Jeep had gave you some problems would you do it again? You were over haft your weight and with out brakes on the trailer it could be hard to stop in a emergency. I did the same thing once with a Vega and when on a steep pass going down I was wondering weather I was going to be able to slow it down for a curve that was ahead! I tighten up my uno what pretty good that time and that was the last time I did that again! I even carried 1,800lbs on the roof of a VW Bug with a good home built rack and the gap would open and close above the doors on the bumps, that was my younger days when nothing could hurt me. Just a thought. Mark H.

Just because you can pull it doesn't mean that you are incontrol of it!

Emergency moves can easily lead to loss of control.

Always properly match tow vehicle to load.

After working for U-haul for several years, I've had to pick up the remains of several accidents where people thought they knew best.

If U-Haul auto transports can haul a Suburban, they can handle an "N" with not problems. Just make sure the tow vehicle can handle the load.

Tow slow, plan ahead and be safety minded at all times.

Good advice, too many people don't know how to drive properly in the first place, but when they are being pushed by an extra 4500 lbs, lookout.

Forgot to mention that Uhaul's transports have their own independent braking system. Works off the centrifugal force...when you apply your brakes the trailer's brakes apply at the same time. I felt less "push" from the loaded trailer than I did when I pulled a 16' boat and trailer.
My Jeep also had the towing package which allows for pulling 6000lbs (including trailer and tractor) with a transmission cooling system. I should have plugged Jeep while I was at it. I have two Jeep Cherokees with over 100,000 miles on each. I have had very little problem with either of them.

After working for U-haul for 12.5 years; I found that on over 50% of the trailes that had breaks, the brakes did not work!

Just because they have brakes on them, doesn't mean they work!

When in proper operational order, their breaks do a great job of controling the load.

I don't deal much with Ebay, but like anything else the more research you do, the luckier you get!

U-Haul works great! I hauled my N from North Idaho to SW Michigan, then up to the top of Michigans UP, then to the Oregon Coast, then back to North Idaho. Pulled like a dream behind my fully loaded '96 F150. The local U-Haul dealer up here rents me trailers for a flat rate of $25.00 as long as I return it the same day.

Mikey

P.S. If anyone goes to rent a U-Haul, tell them you are hauling a 1941 (or so) Ford convertible. They sometimes have a problem with hauling farm equipment.

I used a Uhaul recently to move my 48 8N, cost me $50.00 for 24 hours. Trailer was great, service not so good. This dealer is always extremely busy. Long waits in line, etc. They also argued that an 8N tractor would not fit the "car transport". I just told the counter guy that I would take my chances. Of course, it fit perfectly. I asked about buying one of their older trailers, but I was told that uhaul did not sell trailers.
