1951 8N STARTER PROBLEM

The starter on my 1951 8N turns very slow or not at all, with the battery fully charged. I replaced the solonoid and still have the same problem.

Do you think that the "brushes" in the staeter are not making contact? If so could a person take off the band and inspect the "brushes" without removing the starter and perhaps tap the "brushes" and the starter might work? If not are new "brushes" easy to install?

If your battery cables are too small, you can not deliver enough juice to the starter on a 6 volt system.
I made my own cables from 1/0 Fine stranded welding cable. I cut the cables as short as possible and still have them fit. I soldered a copper connecter on one end, and a brass battery connector on the other.
Make sure all connections are shiney, bright and tight (and in the case of batt. cable add 'fat & short' to that list). This includes the copper 'L' that comes off the solenoid/relay to the post on the starter. Make sure that the ground cable has a clean hole to connect to. I took a .50 calibre rifle, brass bristle cleaning brush and cleaned the threads in the hole that I used and wire wheeled the threads on the bolt.
I have also had batteries that when checked with a voltage meter, look fine. However, they would not turn a starter for diddly!

Try checking the connections and make sure they are all tight; that is probably the most common cause. Check the positive ground cable, make sure it is heavy enough - many times the original equipment was replaced and whatever was at hand was used "just to get by for now" and it wound up staying that way. I don't think it is your starter brushes, but I am not an expert. They would not be easy to replace, I think you would have to replace the entire starter.
Good luck with it, and keep smiling! :>)

Sounds like a poor ground to me. If cleaning connections don't work, replace the ground cable first and then the positive.
