I am considering restoring this 1951 8N-B. I notice that the block had been welded close to the oil dip-stick. Probley the engine froze and the blocked cracked years ago.

I took out the sparkplugs, 1 and 2 cylinders were not fireing, the plugs were very wet, however cylinders 3 and 4 were fireing, the plugs were clean and dry.

Could this be a bad head gasket or a warped block and head? Would Permatex on the gasket do any good?

I can buy a side-distributor 8N, restored for $2,200 in very good condidtion. I might get $1,600 for the 8N-B that is in very bad condition.

Do you think I should buy the restored 8N and sell the pice of junk I already have, to save money?

All reponses are welcome

I think I'd also go with the side mount, but one thing to check though, I had a 801 Ford tractor that I bought that was just rebuilt before I got it and I think had it not been down hill to load on the trailer I don't think I would have got it on the trailer. Then when I got it home I could not get it started to get it off the rented trailer, I ended up pushing it off by hand.

A few weeks went by until I got a chance to trry and get it going, when I did no luck, I tried everything, rebuilding the carb, changing coil, almost to the point of giving up. I took one plug out at a time to check for spark, when I had the first three out believe it or not the tractor started ,running on only one plug. I later discovered that the plugs wires were in the wrong rotation. I put them in the right order and started it up it ran reasonable, with a little bit of a miss. A friend came over and we started it up and he discovered the reason it was missing was that two of the plugs were dead, not firing, wet , other two dry. Changed the plugs with some old one's that I had laying around , it ran perfect. Went down got new plugs , never looked back. Check to make sure all the plugs are good
working order. You might just be lucky to find that is all the problem.
Good luck Stan

I'd opt for the side-mount for $2200.
