Locked up 8N

I have an 8N that has been running great (except for burning a lot of oil). The problem I am having is that everything is locked up. I just started it up this morning, and it was acting like that it was running on 3 cylinders. Usually when this happens, I put in a clean set of plugs and am on my way. But this time, it wouldn't even try to start after changing them. I can hear the solenoid engaging, but nothing happens.

When I try to pull it in fourth gear, the left wheel spins in reverse while the right wheel spins forward. When in neutral, the wheels are not locked at all. Also, when the PTO is engaged, I can't even force it to move with a pipe wrench (I didn't try too hard since I didn't want to break anything). Any ideas?

Thanks,
Eric

Sounds like the starter is binding up on the big ring gear inside. As Merle says, back the starter bolts out about 1/2 inch. You may have to drive the starter away from the tractor (forward) with a big screw driver or chisel. It should go SPROING! when the starter frees itself. And the starter will be loose on the bolts. Retighten bolts and you should be on your way. My 49 does this about every 2 months. I carry proper tools to quick fix this at all times. Look forward to a new starter gear or a new ring in the future, but for now this should get you by. HTH Steve 8N 169302

I finally got it fixed. And I owe it to all of the great advice I received. As everyone said, the problem was due to the starter being locked up, and I only made the situation worse by pulling the tractor forward while in fourth gear. I couldn't even get the starter off until I pulled the tractor backwards while in fourth gear.

Once I got the starter off, I realized that the drive assembly was ruined (probably from pulling it forward). I took it to a New Holland dealer, and he told me that it was an after market piece of junk. I went home with the new assembly, did a little grinding on the engine (so the new larger assembly would fit in), and now I am up and running.

Thanks to you all,
Eric

Take the spark plugs out and put the trans in neutral. See if you can turn the engine over using the front crank pulley. If not it sounds like the engine is seized.
