2N Steering rebuild

I am ready to tear apart the steering assembly on my 2N, inasmuch there is a lot of "slop" and backlash in it. As I understand it from the FO-4 manual, the only adjustment I can see is to add shims (thrust washers) to the sector shafts on either side as needed. Is there any other adjustment a person can do on this assembly ? It looks to me like the pinion and shaft are not adjustable in the housing. Thanks.

You can adjust the up and down slop in the steering pinion by removing the steering wheel, cap and lock nut. Under it is a post nut that you can tighten that draws the pinion closer into the sector gears. That will take care of that backlash.

You'll probably find that if you dig into your steering housing, you find that your sector gear teeth may be worn big time. Especially the teeth in the middle (straight on driving position) of the gears. Outer thrust washers would help but if your teeth are wore down to the point where you can skin a deer, you may want to invest in new or used sector gears with a matching pinion. You will have to take your hood and necessary stuff off to inspect this.
