I'm about to put my steering box back together...I got new rope seals, and I cleaned out the old seal grooves real good....is ther anything else I should do....should I prelube the rope, or use a sealer on the ends.... I sure don't want it to leak.

thanks in Advance
Steve

The others pretty much answered the question. When I replaced my sector gears and pinion, I put new half bushings and rope seals in. I believe I remember having to cut the seals to size and then lubing them a bit with some gear oil. The rope seal is to keep oil or earl (my accent) inside the sector housing. I replace mine 3 yrs ago and aint got no seepage yet.

May you only have seepage where seepage is suppose to be..... from you, not the tractor. :-)

May want to consider others who have more experties, but I'll sahre my experience anyhow.

I just cleaned the grooves and pressed the new rope seals in without any treatment. They fit great, nice and snug...and no problems yet after 4 months of use. No leaks or other problems they are still snug. for what it's worth...which ain't a whole lot! 9N'er

I am about to rebuild the steering box on my 2n also. Question: what are the rope seals for ? To keep out dirt, or are you supposed to fill the box with oil ? My Fo-4 manual is not clear on this. Thanks

The steering box is lubricated by the oil being splashed up form the transmision....mine seemed to get plenty of oil, as the sector shafts leaked on both sides....Unlike an 8N, there isn't much to do.

By the way....if you look at Tyler's website, can't think of the URL, you'll see an ingenious way his grandfather added extra lubrication. Very cool. He ran a line up from thhydraulics, so he could lube manually without getting his hands dirty.....pur American genious.

Take Care
Steve
