Here it is "from the horses mouth" - or direct from the Ford parts catalog of 1955. Also same as 1949 parts catalog.

Quoting from my "Webster's New World Distionary",
vermilion
1. bright-red mercuric sulfide, used as a pigment.
2. any of several other red earths resembling this.
3. bright yellowish red.

Sorry, I just had to post this! :-)

For comparison purposes, here's a link to a picture of my 8N painted with Tisco paints. The red is TP-110 LF and the grey is TP-240 Ford Medium Grey. Tisco makes a Ford red but it was too orange for my taste. I believe this red is an IH color, but I like it because it's more of a blood red. Both of these are holding up well after a couple of years, but the tractor is sheltered most of the time. Needless to say, it's difficult to tell from photographs because of the lighting.

Seems the paint issue comes up every week or two. Best matches seem to be from the back of a tool box, can of old Ford paint prior to 1958 or by some ones old paint chart that may or may not work with the present days paints. Ford will be of no help as they stopped supplying 8N red in the 60-70's era and went out of the tractor business for good in the mid ninetys. My opinion for what it's worth, is to paint it whatever shade of red you feel is correct. Your color is as good as the next guys!

..... ..always thought "Candy Apple Red" with Yellow Flames along side the hood would be neat. (grin) To me, the only time color is an "issue" is when you are trying to "match" color after a repair. And since "Ford Red" is a notorious color fader, trying to make the current color match the original color will never happen. Just go ahead and repaint the whole darn thing with what ever color you think is "correct" and everything will "match"..... ....Dell

Sometimes color just does'nt matter. My father-in-law restores mostly JDs. These he paints the correct colors. He has one Massey that he uses for parades called "Smiley Face", its painted purple and lavender with a big smiley face plate on the front. He also has one called "rusty" which is just that - total rust, but runs great. He shows it next to a fully restored MF - before and after! He has loaned me his Ford 851, which is a "working tractor" but I'm also slowly restoring.
So paint it what you think is right.
John
