I started the tractor up about a week ago and it ran very rough and lacked its usual power. I just assumed that it was acting this way because it was cold outside and the tractor hadn't been run in weeks. Yesterday I tried to start it but it only sputtered - no sign of starting. I tried several times but the only thing that happened was the carburetor started discharging gasoline from the bottom of the bowl. Thinking that the plugs were fouled I pulled one out - dry as a bone! I then checked spark at the plug only to find that there wasn't any at all. Rather that go out and start replacing components until the problem is corrected I thought that maybe somebody out there could give me some advise before I put the crowbar in my wallet. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you.

I have a '41 9N and every once in a while this happens to me. Aside form the usual areas to check, never forget to check the ignition switch. Twice loose connections in this area have caused this very problem.

I have an 1952 8N also, it seems that it is always needing the points worked on. You should have a side distributor. I have never know to have anything wrong with the coil or anything else, I just take off the distributor cap, turn on ignition and see if there is spark at the points. You can do this by touching a screw driver to the points and ground. I'm sure you will find your problem in the points. Good luck.

The points were replaced as well as the condenser distributor cap and rotor. Additionally, the primary contact (thin copper strip) that runs between the points and the stud was in poor condition as was the insulator. Replaced those as well and the tractor runs fine.
Thanks for your help
Keith

KEITH, IM BY NO MEANS AN EXPERT, BUT DO YOU HAVE POWER AT THE WIRE FROM YOUR COIL TO THE DISTIBUTOR, IF SO CHECK YOUR POINTS/CONDENSER, IF NOT CHECK FOR POWER AT THE COIL. YOU CAN USE A VERY INEXPENSIVE TEST LIGHT TO CHECK FOR POWER. HOPE THIS GETS YOU HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
