have a 52 8n just rebuilt carb tried adjustments with needle jets- getting enough fuel. so I don't think my problem is w the carb. I have little power in gear w/ the PTO engaged. the tractor does smoke quite a bit and I'm wondering if I should just rebuild the engine. I've just had the tractor for a year or so, propaply paid too much for it when I bought it $3,300 and now my wife thinks I'm a fool. I need some advise? sould I rebuild?

Thanks for the replys. points, rotor, plugs and cap all new. I warmed the engine up & did a compression check today #4=75psi #3=80 #2=85 #1=90 I know the minimum compression should be 90psi. I have rebuild 4 or 5 car engines over the years so I'm sure I can tackle this. Besides I live a ways out and the only ford tractor shop is a grandma and grandpa shop and grandpa always has more work than he can handle. I'm sure he'll put me on his wait list for $1,400 engine rebuild.

Those readings are low but you should be able to run it a few years and do no further damage. Is your governer working? With the pto engaged and the brush hog on, have your wife let out the cluch and watch the governer shaft. It should apply more juice to the carb.

Someone suggested the hog may be bad. Does the hog run for a minute or so after you bring it up to full speed and kill the engine?

Max..... .I flunked mind reading, just ask my ex-wife (grin), so glad you decided to post your compression readings.

Since you've rebuild several engines, then you should know the value of compression readings for evaluating the condition of an engine. Why make us guess?

Recommend you seriously consider getting an I&T FO-4 repair manual. Readily available at tractor parts stores, online sponsors of this great N-Board, even Ford/New Holland fer peets sake. $25 cheep, get one. ..... ...Dell

I'm still not sure how the govenor actually works though.

Max, Just re-read your post from the 13th and assume it's the same problem. How does the tractor run without trying to run the hog? Run fine? Climb hills? If so, maybe the hog is binding up and pulling the tractor down. How did it run before the rebuild? Was poor performance the reason for the carb rebuild? Did it get bad all at once or slowly over time? As others have said, there's lots to check before jumping into a rebuild. I'll bet the final answer is much simpler than a rebuild. Keep feeding us details. We're here to help. My 2 cents. Steve 8N 169302

Way before you start taking the engine apart you should do an ignition tune-up. Unless you have done a compression test and you know the rings are sloppy. If you replace all of the easily replaceable parts in the ingnition system; plugs, wires, cap, points, rotor, coil, resistor and check the timing it will set you back maybe $75 and may quite likely cure your power problem. Even if you do eventually rebuild the engine you will still want to put these parts on new. You could trouble-shoot the ignition if you wanted to find an exact culprit but since the tractor is new to you my advice would be to put in all new parts so you have a reference point from here on out.

good luck

With the utmost of respect for you, I encourage you to get some help working on this tractor. From your brief words, you've leaped way to fast into the notion of a rebuild, and haven't covered the essential basics first.

There are hundreds of books written on those basics, they are far beyond the scope of a little web board. So many nuances that have to be seen with the eye, not just described with a keyboard.

Don't dispare, these machines are remarkably rugged. Mine is a thoroughly worn out wonder that chuggs along just fine. Down on power a bit (though it still has more power then it has traction), goes through oil, can't idle well. But it still gets the job done just fine. Yours most probably can to, with a little help and some skinned knuckles.
