A post a couple of days ago about Kubotas reminded me about something that happened this spring when I went to a Kubota dealer to buy a rotary cutter:

I told the guy that I needed a rotary cutter for a Ford 8N. As we walked out to look at what he had, I told him that I'd looked at Kubotas, and just couldn't see spending $18K or so on one.

He looked at me and said, "Yeah, but these are 30-year tractors."

It took all of my willpower not to call him an idiot, but I did point out to him that I was driving a 50+-year old tractor.

:)

I can hardly wait for them to find parts for them thar kubotas in 30 years! Kinda like the MC industry. If you have a foreign bike over 20 years you might as well park it. If you have a HD, well the same is true of the Ns.

You are right for the most part, but parts for BMW's are cheaper than for Harleys, because like HD, they made the same lines for so long.....but they can't get an extra 20 for a logo.

Unfortunately, the performance of a Kubota is higher (you get more done) than a N series...just like most most any Japanese MC has over a HD. But sometimes a slight trade-off is worth it.

It's nice working on my dad's HD, and know I can go to my dealership and actally get the part.

Take Care
Steve

For what it's worth: I didn't grow up on a farm, I grew up in the suburbs. We have a long family history that had to do with farming, carepentry, and teaching. So, the suburbs and neighbor after neighbor after nieghbor were within 25 feet was foriegn to my family history, but did stunt my background and knowledge about the land and tractors and many things mechanical. the point is I don't know a lot about tractors and working the land. But, I do have gut feelings.

I was at a Fair this weekend, and was able to crawl around a large Kubota tractor. WOW! it was big, and it had a powerful engine (i think)...and NEW! Then I put my hands on the sheet metal and components, and the first thoughts was...this thing will last 20 years at the most, and it was scaled way back in rugged componentry to cram and fit more on a ship and get em' to America.

The friends I were with have a 6800 Kubota...and praised it. Then I said, how much!? and they said 19k. I said, my 60 year old 9N and 45 year old 850 with 50 year old Dearborn Loader 45 year old backhoe, all combined comes to less than 9k. And I said, they can do as much or more for half the price, they have history, and will go another 60-100 years. Well, he said more and more about Kubota's, and then in my mind I said to myself: I'm happy with what I got and wouldn't have anything more or less..." I am ok with these old Fords and it beats the heck out of the old wheelbarrow, snow shovel, and shovel.

Seeing a bright orange Kubota is nice, but seeing a beat old 850 working away with a spanking new 9N next to it just turns a smile.

I won't hardly go to the local New Holland/Kabota any more. They remind me of red neck used car salesmes. I alway feel like I should shower after I leave. I prefer the Tractor Supply Center. Much friendlier people.

I wonder what the cost of an N in (pick a year) would translate to, given inflation,in today's dollars?

Given a list price of $585 for a '39 9N, it would have been a little over $7K in 1999 dollars, according to this calculator.

A '52 8N, list $1,200, would be $7500.

Add in for Emissions, ROPS, OSHA, and all of the electronics and hydraulics and Live PTO and your upto --- Drumroll --- $18K
It still would be a better tractor than anything out there

Ah , but have you ever really WORKED a Kubota?
I couldn't beleive the boulders a buddy was able to push around with the one we had rented...Amazing. But probably....the FOUR WHEEL DRIVE had the most to do with it! Now if I could only find one of those 4 by 4 conversions for my 850 I'd be dangerous..!
Gotta compare apples to apples here. You won't ever do the same work with a N as a 4 wheel drive compact tractor. But for the jobs an N is good for, they are hard to beat!
Parts availability scares me now for the orange stuff.. Just imagine 30 years from now with all the different models they made.Ouch! You thought that aluminum grille was expensive!;-)
