My dad just gave me a '49 8N to use around my mini ranch. It runs good (when it starts) but it smokes like a forest fire and there is motor oil in the radiator mixed with the coolant but clean oil in the pan. I'd like to have the engine rebuilt to fix the problems it has. I'm not a motorhead whatsoever. I'm wondering if anybody knows a good place in the Wyoming/Colorado/Nebraska region. I'm located in Cheyenne, WY. Also if anybody knows a ballpark figure on the cost of such a project.
Thanks, Tim

There is a fella in Sheridan who posts here from time to time. He's doing a complete rebuild on his 2N. He might be able to point you to someone. His handle here is Tom.WY. Sift through the archives until you find him, then you can email him.

Expect about $500 for a 'complete rebuild kit'.
This would include just about every part in the engine except crank and cam. If they need to be turned (which you will need to check before ordering the kit so you know what bearings to get) you will be looking at $200+ extra. Oil pump rebuild is extra...throw-out bearing, clutch plate, seals....You are looking at $1000 just in parts and machining.

If all you need is rings and a head gasket, I can do that in a day...Total cost...Rings/Head Gasket + 1 case of Molson Red :-)

Salmoneye: What do you think? How about we get together and do a side by side ring replacement on my engine? You can teach and demonstrate on my 9N, and I'll sit there and drink the Molson's, ask questions, and drink some more Molson's and ask more questions. LOL

Then, we can switch; you demonstrate how to replace rings on your engine...and I'll sit there and drink Molson's and ask questions, and then ask questions and drink more Molson's. LOL

By then end of the day, I will be in a state of mind to plan the "First Annual All New England N-Stock Thunderin Ford Ride-In" next year on the 4th. Whatyas say?

:)

Drop the pan, pop the head, and pop a beer...
Twist the nuts off the rod bearing-caps, and twist the cap off a beer...
Slide the piston out the top of the head, and slide a beer down your throat...
Remove the old rings, clean the pistons, install new rings, compress new rings and slide assembly back in the bore. Be careful during this part to remove all bottle caps from the block before reinstalling the pistons...Then you can have another beer...

The rest is easy...
Make sure that the new rod bearings are the correct size, clean any carbon off the head, get the gasket right on the pan, and make sure that the open beer doesn't have time to get warm...

Then we can do mine...

:-)

Can't help you on a mechanic in your area. I was just quoted $1500. for a total rebuild by a local mechanic who has an excellent reputation in this area. Got the same problem you do, use a quart of oil about every 4-5 hours while bush hoggin. Oil pressure stays above 30lbs on 90+ degree days and she don't leak. Hope to get buy with a ring job.
