Does anyone know of a technique or tool to use to spread the control rods on and off of the control valve on a 2n? I tried going through both sides but my hands are large and once I get in there I almost cant move. I was able to do it by having a friend push on one side with the handle end of a breaker bar. Is this the only way? Any suggestions?

Somewhere in the archives is a write up on using two six inche c-clamps, one on each side to spread the control arms apart enough to remove the control valve. I tried it recently when rebuilding my lift, it worked great!! My hands were too big also to fit inside. Good luck!!

You can take a piece of wire and tie it to one of the control rods and then tie it off to something outside the lift and then go to the other side and pull that one over to release the control T.

While we are talking about the control rods for the pump. I was at the local tractor bone yard this week and was looking at a TO 20 ferguson lift. The control rods on Mr. Fergusons TO 20 are connected with an aluminum gizmo that is astride the PTO shaft and the rods are bolted to that thing. The only way that the control rods can come off the T is is the bolts are removed from both control rods where they attach to the gizme that is astride the PTO. Pretty ingenious looking affair. This was on the later than 2N version of his famous lift that he manufactured after his split with Ford. It is about a 1950 model, but I think all the later Ferguson systems had this refinement.

I did it with a hand on one side, and a big, heavy screwdriver thru the other side. If you have someone to help, you can also take the drain plug out of the pump housing. It is big enough to allow another person to get some needle nose pliers in there and hold on to the "T" part of the pump contol valve and gently pry one end away from the rod.

Thanks for the good ideas, I really appreciate it.
Have a good one.
P.S. Reccomend a good article that explains in detail what position and draft control is and how a Zane Thang works????
Thanks,
T
