there is a hole where a sherman trans lever might have been in my 2N. what is involved in purchasing
the parts to restore my 2N back to having a step
up transmission, if it ever had one to begin with?
also is it very labor intensive?

Dave..... biggest part of re-installing a "sherman" is $600 for a used sherman tranny with all the parts. Remember, they don't make parts for shermans anymore..... ..Dell

Basically you need to find a Sherman transmission, which is a task in itself. They don't run cheap. You just need to buy the transmission unit, split the tractor at the clutch behind the engine, remove the stock input shaft going into the 2N transmission and install the Sherman in it's place. There are shims that are installed where it bolts on. The Shermans have a helical gear where it goes into the 2N transmission, and the 2N should already have the mating gear (early 9N's didn't).

If the hole is on the left side, high up near the steering gear, then it had a Sherman combination step-up/step-down. If is right behind the starter (more than likely in a 2N), it had either a step-up (most popular) or a step-down.

It's not beyond the novice to install, but you will need the proper equipment (jacks, wrenches, I&T repair manual) to do it. Good luck.

I would be careful about which sherman you buy. I have a sherman step up trans in my 2n and frankly, I never use it because I need lower gearing, not higher. I think a sherman combination under/over is the way to go. My $.02.
