I have a 1945 2N that reads -20 anps while operating. I have a new coil and ballister resister. My alternater has only one pole and I don't know if it needs to be tickled by also placing a light off the pole. I don't know what type of 12 volt alternator it has, but it has a single pole and the rear indicates a High and Low (what ever that means. It just worries me to see the -20 on the dash mounted amp meter. I don't want any damage, due to neglect. It runs and start find. Any help?

Thank You,

ChuckD

From your description, it sounds to me like the "alternator" might actually be the OEM third-brush generator. That generator has a single terminal on the back and a screw adjustment labeled + and - (some might be labeled High and Low).

Are you sure it's an alternator?

IF YOUR BAT STAYS UP AND KEEPS GOING, YOUR AMMETER MAY BE CONNECTED WRONG. TO CHECK IF YOUR ALTERNATOR IS CHARGING YOU WILL MEASURE ABOUT 14.7 VOLTS AT THE BAT TERMINALS WHEN THE TRACTOR IS RUNNING AT FAST IDLE. ONE TERMINAL ALTERNATORS HAVE THE EXCITE TERMINAL INSIDE AND DONT REQUIRE ANY OTHER CONNECTIONS. IF YOU RUN IT OVER TO WIMBERLEY, I WILL CHECK IT OUT FOR YOU. GOODLUCK
