I decided to keep my 6 volt system. After testing my generator I adjusted the charge down from 9 to 4to5. My question is what would cause the amp meter to read neg- after shutting the tractor off. The battery is brand new, just charged. The meter reads 0 before running and after reads neg- 10-20. Please help. Thank you for your input.

There is a gizmo called a Cut-off. It's not a regulator, it only tells the system to hook up when current is going to the battery, and to disconnect when the voltage is low enough for the battery to discharge.

I'd bet yours is not working. Next time you shut your tractor off, tap on the cut-off with a small hammer (just a civilized tap, no Farmer antics) while watching your ammeter.

If that doesn't work, disconnect the wire at the cut-off. the results should be immediate.

Incidently, I bought a new one as a matter of good maintenance. It was bad right out of the box. I currently have my rusty old one still on it.

Take Care
Steve
