Key Switch wiring?

I replaced my '48 8N's key switch on Saturday. The old one seems to have sort of melted down - hard to say. Anyway, I wired it up exactly as the old one was - with one of the wires going to the resistor block. However, I noted that this particular wire was connected to the upper right hand (tractor's right hand) side of the resistor block; the same post as the feed wire that comes from somwhere on the right of the steering wheel. Nothing is connected to the left side and then a number of things (lights?) are connected to the bottom center post.

I looked at my manual, which isn't handy just now, and it appears that the keyswitch wire should be connected to the upper left post on the opposite side of the resistor, which makes sense if the resistor is doing anything useful. But the tractor would not start that way. Just spin (much more slowly).

Am I about to melt down my keyswitch again? And if so, why won't it start if it's "correctly" connected per the manual?

It's a 6V positive ground system. As you can tell, electricity is not my favorite topic.

Thanks, Brent

PS. It ran hard for two days like this. And for months if not years prior to my replacing the switch.

Hi Brent: Bop on over to Neil Reitmeyer's N web site by clicking here and see if the schematic he has posted helps you solve this.

Ed, its sorta like that. I wish I had a picture or the manual handy. First, mine is an early 8N so it's mostling like the middle drawing. I presume the squiggly is the resistor. If so, my coil and key switch are on the same post.

There is a third post that the lights are connected to. Unlike that drawing.

What should happen if I'm wiring from coil directly to switch w/o resistor? Wouldn't something fry?

Brent

I think that will toast your coil and points. Claus would be the one to confirm or clarify this though. He's more knowledgable than I on elec. problems and solutions.
