I have a problem with my #3 cylinder in my '48 8N. I pulled the plugs on all cyliners. #3 plug was covered with crud, not firing. I checked dry compression: #1 90#, #2 90#, #3 75-80#, #4 90#. I didn't do a wet check yet. That's my next step. Put new plugs and wires on. Pulling the wire off #3 plug has no effect. Spark at #3 is OK. I am now suspecting a stuck valve on #3. I tried running automatic transmission fluid through the carb to try and un-stick the valve. It seems to have helped a little. Any suggestions?

Doubt if a valve is stuck if you have 75-80 psi on #3. Possibly sticky valve???. If the plug is fouled my guess is you probably have stuck or worn rings. The oil you poured possibly helped the rings seal temporarily. Next step is the wet compression test. ray

If the rings are stuck but still have some compression, wouldn't I see a little difference in the running of the engine when I pull the plug wire off #3?

It seems that I'm not getting any power out of #3 even though it has compression and spark.

Maybe I'm not getting fuel into #3 because of bad valve or ??? Occasionally it seems to fire and a puff of smoke comes out the exhaust.

I have the same problem on my 8n.I pulled the valve cover and found the #3 exhaust valve had worn threw the top of the cover on the lifter it would fire every once in a while and then go back to a mise on that cylinder.
