Live PTO for N's (Ignorant Question)

Have to ask this question. Not that I'm completely stupid, but am ignorant about some things and this being one of them. I know that (for example)the Ford 801 has live pto with a 2 stage clutch. What else is involved that allows this to operate in the live pto mode? Just wondering if a 2 stage clutch would be all that's needed for the N's to have live pto.

I know, I know but curiosity killed the cat.It just hit me one day driving along and got me to wondering.

Thanks for the replys. I kinda knew that it probably wasn't possible without some major re-doing. It was just something that popped into my head while driving along 1 day.

This must be orc/live clutch month, I never saw so many questions on it! :)

Ford 801's came in different versions, so you are not even totally correct on that. The 861 would have a 5-speed tranny with a double clutch. Other models of 801 would not.

As to the N series, they came with a fourspeed. Where do you stick to bigger double clutch, the extra output shaft, etc? What you are asking is trying to stick a semi truck engine in a Ford Escort - How do you adapt anything to match up to anything else???? It's not just a clutch plate, it's the whole entire tranny that is totally different.

In another forum I think you mentioned a friend had a live pto added. I have never heard of this, but I guess anything is possible. Are you sure he doesn't have a Sherman hi/lo added, which give the N extra geras (double or triple)? This can affect the speed of the pto I think, but does not make it live.

I hope this helps, there are no stupid questions, but if I'm wrong it's a dumb answer. :)

Bob..... .probablely greater minds than yours and mine have also pondered the question. ...Re... Live PTO for N-Tractors, any way to "reto-fix" 'em?

Ya gotta provide 2 power paths via some sort of a gear train mechanism and must be able to load/unload (ie....2 stage clutch) as required for operation.

I think the final answer was it is a whole lot eazier and cheeper to go buy a different tractor that all ready had live PTO..... .Dell

Since the PTO is driven off the counter shaft which is driven by the input shaft, and the thigh bone is connected to the leg bone, oops getting carried away here. As long as the main clutch is engaged and the pto is engaged, it will turn. Someone would have to come up with a kit to install a clutch mechanism between the PTO shaft and the counter shaft. This of course would also affect your non-live hydraulics which run off the pto shaft.
Try not to make a color television out of a black and white.
Happy Motoring

why not install a hydrulic pump on the engine as like for an endloader and a hydrulic motor on your implement shuch as a snowblower

Do you remember in th early days of color TV when someone sold an overlay for the B/W TV screen that was supposed to "simulate" color?

I have a friend who has a Allis Chalmeres CA.It has this ingenious little clutch built into the right axle. Pulliing on the hand lever stops the forweard motion of the tractor, as the differential transfers the traction to this now free shaft. Since the PTO is left spinning, and the hydraulics run from the PTO, it is really "live" PTO and hydraulics. It works good. He has a snowblower mounted on it, and just creeps it slowly into the snow. I always thought a well thought out right replacement axle with built in clutch would have been a great option in it's day. I am sure there must be technical limitations, as it would have been done before.....

Good Luck Steve
