'Da Cap Don't Fit

I was out moving dirt when I started hearing ticking coming from the area of my '52 8N sidemount distributor. As the sun set, I could see a pronounced spark travelling down the side of the cap to the metal dist housing. Time for a new cap & rotor.

Napa sells me the parts but neither cap nor rotor fit my dist. The cap's too big. So I return them to NAPA and mail order from another AG supplier, thinking that the Napa books must be wrong.

The new cap and rotor came in the mail today, and they are also too big. It looks like Napa books are right and I have a nonstandard distributor in my sidemount distributor hole.

I'll go out and hunt up the numbers off the dist this afternoon and see if AutoZone can cross reference the cap and rotor to keep me up and running for the short term.

But I also think the dist shaft might be bent (it wobbles a tad while the engine is running, so I probably want to throw the whole thing away anyway.

Anyone have a used sidemount dist that they want to let go cheap (now that I have the complete tuneup kit for it)?

Thanks
Don8NAZ

If the distributor housing is cast iron it may be an Autolite. Apparently Autolite offered an 8N replacement distributor sometime in the 50's or 60's but most of them seem to be out of circulation now. The Napa part numbers for the rotor and cap are AL69 and AL70. Of course if the shaft is bent, it may not be worth salvaging. You might check the shaft end play, because the handful of 8N Autolites I've seen all had way too much end play.

Thanks Andy.

Napa took 10 minutes (and $25) to find that exact replacement of AL-165/AL-150 for cap/rotor. They could only tell me that it looked like a Prestolite product and was off an industrial engine - maybe a generator or water/oil pumping station.

I gotta go move dirt.

You've got nothing to lose by trying to straighten that bent distributor shaft with a hammer and drift. You might surprise yourself, because bent distributor shafts are pretty easy to straighten.

Once you find out what that non-standard distributor is from, I for one would appreciate it if you'd mention what it comes off of. Don't throw it away btw, especially if it's old. Sure as shoot'n, as soon as you do, you'll discover it was one of those incredibly rare ones that Ford built that way when there was a strike that caused a shortage of distributors on the production line, or some story like that.

Thanks Nolan,

I'm not sure I could get my heart into pounding the shaft of my one of a kind distributor. I'll wait until I have a replacement in hand.

Surely someone out there has a sidemount distributor that they want to part with, to go to a good home, only used on weekends, regular meals, occassional shower, etc!

My grandfather used to say "If it don't fit, get a bigger hammer".

A boss I had a long time ago told me this wise saying from a Native American Indian he knew back in the 40's:

"That no matter how high the Eagle flies; a hammer can still break a window."

He had an unusual sense of humor. -9N'er
