Hope somebody can give me a bit of advice here. I've been sandblasting away at the chassis of my 2N (SN 9N198527) and have found that the bell housing area under the battery mount is severely pitted. I'll assume it's from the battery boiling over or something like that. Is this common? None of the pits are through the casting but several are pretty deep. I was thinking of using some of the steel filled epoxy to fill the area in for cosmetic reasons, but should I be concerned about strength at all? I've never had much success at welding cast but would farm this job out if need be....

Thanks for the advice & I'll try to get some pictures posted soon of my "project".

After filling and shaping you can match the roughness of the cast iron by placing coarse sand paper over it and tapping it with a hammer or stippling it with a prick punch.

Dell is right, use JB Weld to fill in the pitting. But more importantly, watch your battery. Depending on how you use your tractor, the 2N/9N do not regulate the battery voltage and if you run your tractor a lot, it is easy to overcharge your battery and hence the boiling over... You may want to put on your lights if you have them or consider getting lights if you do not have them.
Happy Motoring

If it is just for cosmetic purposes use Bondo (body plastic). It is going to sand and prep a whole lot easier than epoxies. This is how all the hit miss engine guys fill up the 80 years worth of rust pits.

Bob..... ..yeah, you're right, battery acid. No, don't weld cast iron. You could problably fill the pits with "braise" rod. Or solder. But I'd recommend you investigate some of the epoxies out there. A lot of members have nice words to say about "J&B Weld"..... ....Dell
