Lift creeps up and won't adjust on 8N.

I've got a '49 8N with a 5 ft hog on it. My problem is that when I try to adjust the height for a higher cut, the lift will raise the deck and hold where I put it, for a while. However, when I'm in the field, it starts creeping up and eventually goes all the way up. Putting down the lift handle doesn't drop it unless I click the handle under the seat back and forth 4-5 times. It's very annoying since I can't control the height unless it's all the way down. Then I'm cutting way to close to the ground when I'm in thick brush. The hog was mounted too close to the PTO, so when it goes all the way up, the hog driveshaft binds against the deck of the hog.

I'm supposing that a valve is sticking somewhere, but I don't know how much work would be involved.
When I want to do a lift, I have plenty of lift power, so the hydraulic system seems to operate.

Thanks,
Bob

Thanks fellas. I'll take a look at it. I haven't had much of a chance to pull off the covers and dig deep. I've had to replace just about everything on the tractor over the years, but this has always been annoying.

This tractor was caught in the '93 Missouri flood and was under about 12 feet of water for a couple days!! I had to do a lot of work to get the sucker runnin!

It will still be cutting brush when I'm dead and gone. :-)

Bob..... ...Zane is correct about your hydraulics.

re: hitting the PTO shaft. It is perfectly ok to cut a couple of inches off the hogs PTO shafts (inner & outer) Be prepaired to sacrafice a couple of hacksaw blades. its tuff steel.

Be sure to use an Over Running Couple (ORC) on your tractors PTO. Prevents expensive tranny noises and when you clutch to slow down for a corner, keeps you from running into the corner of the barn, the fence post, creek bank, irrigation canal, wifes car (don't ask)..... ....Dell

Dell, I was just wondering how long it would be before we heard you make "the ORC speech" again! Last summer, a brush hog pushed my cousin's JD 40 into a creek! No damage except to his pride.

I think something is binding in the linkage. Have you looked at the control rod that goes from the top parts to the control valve down in the bottom? Sometimes people will bend this rod in the attempt to make the lift go higher when the linkage gets worn and out of adjustment. Sometimes when it is bent is will make it bind in the hole where the end of the rod goes in the rocker that is attached to the control valve.

There are other places in the lift that can cause it to bind too if they get broken or bent.

I have a booklet and a jig for adjusting the 8N lift. If you would like to learn more about it just email me and I will send you the particulars.
