For the life of me I can not get the timing set as described in the F04 manual. The slot doesn't seem to be long enough to allow the points to open correctly because the screw bottoms out just prior to the points opening.
--With the distributor installed: If adjustment is made to the top of the slot the tractor will not start. As the timing is advanced by moving the adjustment plate down the tractor will start at about halfway. It bottoms out just as the tractor seems to want to run good, but not quite. Can anyone tell me what's going on?
I know it's not me as I don't make mistakes. (I thought I did once, but was incorrect) :) :)
Everything in the distributor is new: shaft w/ weights, both bushings, adjustment plate. The only thing old is the housing. (Couldn't get it to time properly with the old stuff in it either.)
Thanks

Have you considered the possibility that the timing gear inside is off a tooth or two or maybe more?

Yeah, I've considered that the timing marks on crank and cam could be off, but that wouldn't explain why I can't the timing set on the distributor while it's off. I agree with llamas that the parts we're getting ain't up to snuff. I bought a new coil too and it didn't fit tight like the old one did. What we need to do is return these inferior parts and complain instead of just accepting them. But I think the thing is we want and need these tractors running and it's easier and less time consuming to make them work if we can. When we do that and it don't work it's too late to take them back because they're altered.
Thanks for your reply

This is a front-mount distributor. There's no gears to get out of time.

The distributor can be timed as the drawing shows. Do 'em all the time. However, I have noticed, of late, that the points sets sold by both FNH dealers and aftermarket distributors are not all they should be. I have had to adjust several lately (by bending-twisting the fixed point ear) to get them to a) close squarely and b)obtain the correct 0.015" points gap within the range of timing adjustment.

Look at it hard for 10 minutes and figure out which way the points need to be tweaked to get the range of adjustment back - then tweak 'em. Ensure that the points faces meet flat (not along one edge) and adjust the fixed point as required.

I guess what I was reading was that even if he set the distributor to static spec, it wouldn't work on the tractor, hence I wondered if the cam gear/crank gear set was off by a tooth inadvertently somehow.

Thanks for your reply llamas. Yeah I noticed that about the parts not being like they probably should be. Had to file some rough edges off the adjustment plate to get it in the housing. What I was wondering if the arm of the points, that ride on the shaft, is being made long enough. Or maybe the fixed position on the adjt plate is not in the right location. It could be I will need to make a manual adjust somehow like you suggest.
What I've noticed is that at the 1/4" mark the points arm is on the back side of lobe and it has to get to the next lobe to begin to open up. If the timing adjust is made to go up to get in front of the lobe at the 1/4" mark it doesn't come anywhere near making it to the front side.
I'll be taking the distributor off in a little bit and I'll study some more as you suggest.

Thanks again
