I was shredding with my 51 8N and was able to lift the shredder up and down, no prob. Tractor sat a while and I went to lift it up again and nada. I gleaned some info off of this board and made an assumption that I shouldn't be able to lift the shredder unless I kind of reved up the tractor. Is this true or should the shredder be able to be lifted with the tractor at idle rpms?
Hope your answer is that I needed to rev it up so that really nothing is wrong. Would go out and check it myself but land and associated tractor is many miles away.
Thanks in advance as always!
51N Terry

No, there should be no need to "rev up the motor" to get the lift to work. It will work slower at idle, but it will work.

Did you perhaps disengage the PTO - to stop the brushhog turning? Disengaging the PTO will also disengage the hydraulics.

Mine quit working last winter. Wouldn't go up. Wouldn't even budge up. The oil on the rear end dip stick looked brand new. Then later after giving up on other ideas I drained the oil out and was shocked to see how much crud was in the oil even tho it looked like new on the dipstick. I drained the rear end thoroughly and rinsed it out with two separate fuel oil washes of about one gallon each with the engine running and PTO engaged. It budged a few times then so I figured I was on to something. I refilled with oil, but it still wouldnt work right. I redrained, and removed the bottom inspection port so I could look up in there. There was a broken off dip stick in there sort of jammed into the linkage. I removed it, re-filled, and tried again. Still wouldn't work. One more try...Took off the side inspection port, and with about 1/3 of the rear end oil in it that it calls for, while running, I could actually reach into the side of the rear end and "help" the long linkage rod back and forth while I lifted and lowered the lift with the control. It started to work on its own and then started to work perfectly so I replaced the side inspection port plate, topped it off with oil and it has worked fine since.

Harry,
I read your post about inserting your hands into the rear end of a running tractor. Your story sent shivers up my spine when I started thinking about getting your hand caught in a gear on the spinning PTO shaft. I don't think getting pulled through the inspection plate opening, arm first, would qualify you to be "born again":>). Please don't stick your hands into running equipment of any kind!
